Rock: Freezing Vs.Drying

freezing live rock works great for quick removal of hair algea, 48 hours in the freezer will burst the cells in the algea killing it.

I once used liquid nitrogen to ..get rid of un wanted pet. I dont recomend that it did make the rock brittle but on the bright side everything on it died quickly and liquid nitogen is cheap.

funny I was just going to mention liquid nitrogen, we make it everyday...definately can be fun interesting stuff. As long as it is relatively dry it shouldn't crack the rock but agreed it will make it brittle. Just wish I got to post it first, I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking of great new uses for cryogenic liquids

What's wrong with a fresh water soak, hosing it off with the garden hose, and an RO/DI rinse ? Fresh water will kill the marine organisms, spray will remove detritus, and the RO/DI will bond with any stray compounds. A lot less radical than chemical, cooking or freezing solutions with fewer potential problems.

jmo,

Agu,

The problem isn't that the FW soak won't work very well, or perhaps even best of all, but that is just too simple and easy :D

Hi, I bought 50 lbs of rock from Craigslist, well it came back to live (he had it in water in a dark tub) and it had red macro algae that no one would touch. I baked about 30 lbs of it at 400 degrees in my oven for an hour and a half. Problem solved. It will take a while for it to get Coraline on it but it is now great.

Maybe I'm in the nut house or something. I could see the expression on my wifes face when I tell her I will be buying live rock for 2.99 a pound and proceed to kill most everything on it. She might get the shears out to cut something off or feel some pity and send me to home depot for some ceramic and limestone rock for a small fraction of the cost. You can then buy the bacterial culture of your choice and have lots left over for burger king lunches for several months.
