Rock sticking out of water?

I was watching the youtube video of the volcano tank and my mind's been going crazy with ideas. Would it be possible to have rocks sticking out of the water with crabs and such that could go in and out of the water? What would the drawback of this be? I've only ever seen it once lol.

Well, if you had a rimless tank and the rock was sticking out too far, it might be hard to have a screen top

I've tried a few different 'scapes with a "land" portion. This is a pic of my pool when I attempted a mangrove island/beach.

The sand would wick water and never dried out, even though in places it was at least 12" above the water's surface. After about a month, it started to develop a "wet laundry" smell. Wasn't too unbearable, but definitely noticeable if you got close enough. I ultimately decided to "sink" the beach, but still do have a couple pieces of rock that peak above the surface without any issues. Anyway... just something to keep in mind if you should decide to try some sort of island :)

Yes, i've done it before on rimless open top tank. Pretty cool.

Cool, i was thinking of some sort of island with mangroves, maybe even like a little tidal pool looking thing. Ugh there are so many possiblities with SW tanks, i feel the addiction creeping back up on me.

Maybe with an overflow in the middle and LR built up around it, I'm assuming that's what he has done in that youtube video.
