Rod's food is now available at Premium Aquatics

thanks tony

just made that my new wallpaper :)

ive been anxious to use rodsfood, but with shipping cost it will be around 70. which is alot for food. i may just wait until its winter or something lol

anyway, if someone does organize an event at rods ill be there :)

I feed about a 1x1/2" piece every other day (fish should not be fed every day, at least 1x/week off). I also supplement w/a few other things & DT's Phyto Plankton.

It of course depends on the fish. For instance, anthias should be fed several times a day.

please explain why fish need to be feed very other day and atleast skipped once a week.

many have said this, but it would be nice to see a plausible explanation, since you seem very adamant about this premise.

thanks

The key is to do a group order. This will save you big $$$$

Even at $70, you might still save money or come real close. Figure out what your spending in all your combined foods then determine how long Rod's package would last and compare costs. His packet lasts me 8-10 weeks and I feed a 210g very heavily.

very good point Ed.

what ive noticed with a percentage of the rodonyx is that they display a really deep red color, unlike most clowns ive seen both captive/wc.

ive always thought that it was a genetic anomally but i have a feeling it might be due to this food given to them at the juv. stage.

I have never, ever, heard this before...

I have juvi angels, adult angels, tangs, clowns, chromis, butterflies, and according to everything I read, they all need to be fed at least once a day...

In the wild, food is not dropped in front of their face--they have to hunt for it. There are many days they go without. It is best to skip at least one feeding/week, so all food is fully digested. Otherwise, a lot of undigested food is waisted as poop=nitrates. Feeding fish too often can cause fat fish & fatty/liver disease.

This is especially true for slow-moving or larger fish. I have a 1' puffer that eats 1x/wk. I have lurker (hides in a cave all day) & ambush predator (sits buried in sand up to it's eyeballs all day), that eat 2x/wk, even though they are only 4".

That has been my concern regarding feeding (extra poop). Feeding every other day seems perfect for me, the corals go crazy and it's cool having the fish feed from my hand.
Pufferpunk, what do you mean by "at least 1x/week off"

I mean skip at least one day of feeding--no food at all for at least one day per week. I actually feed my smaller fish every other day, or 2 on & 1 off.

puffer,

for obvious reasons it helps with water quality but can you please give an explanation of how skipping feedings will benefit the fish? besides for the obvious water quality.

oh sorry puffer. THANK You for explanation.

i know alot of reefers do it but ive never heard of a good explanation until now.

thanks again

Depends on the fish, puffer. Juvenile tangs, for example, need to be fed not just daily but multiple times daily. Just one example, true for other juv. fish as well. It depends on stock, quantity fed during feeding, etc.

Your blanket statement above, like most in the hobby, doesn't work so well.

Quote from my article in TFH:
"Smaller puffers (under 2") need to eat every day, skipping one feeding/week. Feed them until their bellies are slightly rounded. Medium sized puffers (2-4") should be fed every other day. Larger puffers (4-6) should be fed every 3-4 days. You may find this schedule difficult, as puffers are very adept at begging for food! Feeding puffers every time they beg will cause fat, lazy fish and eventually you will be killing them with kindness."

This would be the same for most non-puffers too. I did not mention juvie fish or fry, obviously this would be a different issue.

I don't see how the metabolism of a puffer would match that of a more active fish, such as a tang or an Anthia. If I go without feeding my Achillies tang for even a day, he looks too skinny. I don't thing it would be a problem for my wrasses, clowns, goby's etc though. Are puffers strictly carnivores?

PK

Yes, puffers are predatory carnivors (crustaceons). I have observed them eating algae wafers & peas, on rare occasion. I have a few very active FW puffer species (to the point of constant, nervous pacing the glass) that are around 2-3". They get fed daily, skipping 1 feeding/wk. At each feeding, they are fed to a nice, round belly. Even small, fast-moving FW fish like zebra danios & neons, are only feed 1x/day, 5-6 days/wk. I am new to the SW end of this hobby (been in FW >27 & BW >5 yrs). It would strike me odd that so many SW fish would require that much more food than the FW/BW species but I'm always learning something new in this hobby! (Now on the other hand, my discus, which are kept at 86 degrees & have a very high metabolism, are fed 2-3x/day but I still skip 1 day/week.)

This feeding method has always worked for me--of course, there are exceptions to every rule...
