Rod's Onyx

So, I headed down to Rod’s last evening to pick up some items, show a new friend from WI Rod’s shop and talk about reefing for a couple of hours. I was a bit surprised to find the Juvi Onyx tank, that’s usually packed with the beautiful little buggers, looking very empty. Rod had shipped out an order of 40 clowns earlier in the week to a Fish Store, so there’s not many left. Here’s a photo of the majority of them that are still there.

I was also surprised to see that his smaller breeder tanks where new hatches are kept were empty as well. Rod has lost 2 batches of recent hatches due a water change/top off water accident.

He did have one small batch of newly hatched clowns, about 30 of them, and here’s a photo of them.

The great news is that while I was there, Mom and Dad Onyx were very busy laying down a fresh spawn of eggs … so that’s good news to those that are wanting to get Onyx clowns in the future. It will be a while before Rod has clowns, so for those of you looking … I would check back with him in a few months!

wow thanks sara

i have a feeling rods Clowns will be harder and harder to get now that they are becoming so popular 40 clownfish orders will not help things

im going to see if my LFS wants to order some they started carrying the food and it sells really well.

sara, thanks for the photos. oh no, longer wait? ugh!

I know, but they are worth the wait! I'm also in the same boat with waiting for clowns for my new 225. I purchased my first pair in October of 2005 and they were the absolute last pair that he had in stock. I wanted them so bad that I didn't mind that the male was missing his last set of stripes!

everyone, rods clowns are definetly worth the wait. if i had to own only one pair of clowns it would prob be rods first.

anyway, i love how the male has a black hood over its eyes :) never seen another onyx have that.

these came today they are from the $50 batch Rod said he did not have to many left and they have not color up like the other ones yet but it just might be the ones that take a lot longer to color up. Fish are great very active and rod was great to deal with
thanks Rod

most onyx come from the Soloman islands and sometimes papau new guinea i beleive

this is A lil history that Rod sent to me in an email that i think might help give some background on these unique clowns. and a lil insight into why they produce the dark black coloration.

"There is a lot of talk about the difference between wild caught onyx percs and my tank raised onyx percs, and in my opinion there is a difference. The term onyx was quoined by Bill Addison of Seaquest (used to be a large hatchery in Puerto Rico). He obtained a pair with the deep black coloration, and was able to have the dark gene reproduce. It is a recessive gene. Its my understanding that the breeders that have been breeding the wild caught dark percs (referred to as onyx) are not able to get any black coloration in their juvies. Also (in my opinion), for a perc to be called an onyx, they have to be almost completely black except for the fins and face (and stripes of course). I also believe that the dorsal should be black. My clowns have these traits and can be traced back to the original source (Bill Addison)."

I bought a pair from a fellow reefer who was leaving the hobby about a year ago and I thought the female was going to be misbarred but apparently now her third stripe is finally coming in!
