Rods vs Reef Frenzy

I highly doubt its the "more water" as people tend to say, that makes the reef frenzy clear faster than rods. I researched both foods and found that the LIKELY cause is that fresh ingredients are used along with no "filler foods to ensure everything is fed". I can promise you that with the reef frenzy blend, EVERYTHING in your tank eats well.

I had sponge, gorgonia and tons of other hard to keep coral that loved the stuff. The LPS in the tanks about turned inside out to get it.

I even rescued mandarins, got them fat and trained them to eat prepared foods. Reef frenzy by far was the food that every single one fell in love with. And yes, this was compared with rods as well.

Overall, and I will say it and back it 100%, the frenzy Food line is far superior than other foods out there. When I find a product I like, I back it as well as my former club and its members as well as my new club and its members!

When do you feed? I feed mostly at night when my lights are on the downswing and things are getting pretty blue. My Radions go off completely around 11pm and I feed somewhere between 9 and 10 usually. I have never ever seen any response from coral come feeding time, regardless of what food i use. Nothing from RF yet, nothing from Rod's, nothing from any other frozen or dried food, including spot feeding with products like Reef Chili. If anything, my coral close up a bit. The only time I've seen what you describe with LPS is my plates or open brains early in the morning, or before feeding time later in the day.

I usually feed around the same time you do. About three hours before lights out for the night. The way I fed was like this. I usually put a very small amount into the water first, just to get everyone "in the mood", after about 10-20 minutes, I would feed normally. The feeder tentacles would sweep like I have never seen before. The zoas would close, the Duncan would close even my nems got some as well. I had a few leopard wrasse as well, which are notoriously shy. When I fed reef frenzy, they would swim up and eat from my hand. When I spot fed my spider sponge and sun coral I would almost get into a huge battle with all the wrasse to keep them away.

If I remember correctly, look at his website and look at the photo of the welso that looks like it turned itself inside out to eat his food. It was customer submitted.

I know for a fact, his ingredients are about as fresh as one can get. The only fresher stuff is catching it yourself and cutting it on the spot. Its all LOCAL North Carolina seafood which a lot of people give him cudos for. He brings everyone in this hobby a superior product and also supports one of the biggest markets in our state. North Carolina is notorious for our sea food and he brings that quality to your tank pets as well. In my book, that alone beats every other frozen food right out of the gate.

Contact your LFS and make them aware. I am pretty sure he has some on the west coast. I may be wrong on that though. If you have a hard time getting the LFS to bite. Email Larry directly and let him know the names of the stores and I'm sure he will contact them and send them free samples to try

Without a doubt Larry's foods are the best food I have used. It's all fresh food with no fillers and it doesn't have that oily residue a lot of these other frozen foods have. Once you try it you'll never want to use anything else. My tank comes alive when I feed.

I have not tried Rod's, but I am happy with Larry's Reef/Fish Frenzy. Cannot yet speak to the long-term benefits, but initially my fish went wild for it! Also note that unlike most of the frozen foods I have used, RF does not kill the head on my skimmer.

I have only used rods original in my tank but this thread is making me want to try Frenzy. I attributed the "dirty" look of rods to it being the coral food (oyster eggs and other smaller particle matter) mixed in with everything else, so I dont wash Rods. I still target PE mysis, but that I will wash so I only get the mysis itself and not the juice. I've also noticed that with PE it important to let it fully thaw before trying to stir or use a baster or you will endup with mysis soup thats not good for target feeding whole mysis to LPS, Dendros, nems. I have a smaller 40G cube with 5 fish and mixed LPS/SPS.

I picked up one of the large packages of Fish Frenzy last week when I was at the LFS and I must have gotten a bad one. I thawed it out and it stank like rotten fish. Needless to say, I didn't feed it to my fish. I went with the Fish Frenzy over the Reef Frenzy because I wasn't a big fan of feeding my fish carrots and broccoli.

Anyway, I sent them an email about the stench of the food so we'll see what happens. I really don't want to have to make a 2 hour round trip back to the LFS to return it.

Did it smell like fish or did it smell spoiled?
If spoiled it's probably your LFS's fault for letting it thaw or something.
But it SHOULD smell very fishy because it's so fresh!

A strong fishy smell indicates the fish is not fresh. Very fresh seafood has almost no smell to it. A slight fishy smell is still okay but anything you would describe as strong is past the point where I would want to eat it.

Definitely smells spoiled.

Oddly enough, I just got off the phone with Larry, the owner of the company. I sent him an email earlier this afternoon and was surprised that I got a response so quickly. We talked for about 20 minutes, during which he apologized and said he would be sending out a new package to me on Monday morning. He also said that he had already been in touch with his contacts along the supply chain in an attempt to determine the issue.

It's difficult these days to find a company that actually cares about their customers and just isn't out there to make a quick buck. These guys stand behind their product 100% and went the extra mile to make things right and address my concerns. Most companies would have told me to drive an hour each way back to the store and return the food. Not Larry. He said that he would ship me out a new package first thing Monday morning, which I'm sure isn't cheap to do.

I'm giving Larry a huge thumbs up for the outstanding customer service.

I'll be sure to update this thread next week when the food arrives, but I'm sure that everything will be fine and it's just a fluke.

With customer service like this, I'm definitely going to be a repeat customer.

I received my replacement food from Larry at Reef Frenzy yesterday and it is 100% better than what I purchased at the LFS. I suspect there was a handling issue at the store that caused the food to spoil.

The replacement food I received smelled just like frozen seafood should smell.. It was well packaged with dry ice in a Styrofoam container and then inside a box. It was still frozen rock solid by the time I got home at 7pm.

I have to say that my fish loved it and there wasn't a bunch of tiny pieces flying around in the tank like some of the "other" brands of frozen food I've tried.

I'll just say that there will always be Reef Frenzy in my freezer. It's the best frozen food I've used to date.

Speaking of which, I bet my fish are hungry again!

I like the tiny pieces.
I have fish of all sizes, not to mention hungry lps and other stuff so I want pieces of all sizes from big chunks to almost microscopic stuff. I've been stirring my RF up real good, practically beating it like an egg to achieve this. Seem to leave me with a real good variety of sizes which is good.
