So, burned out my 65watt PC's on my softie tank. Looked on drsfosterssmith.com and 27.99 each. Thought to myself, "Self (because that's how i address myself when i'm alone in my head), maybe you should check the price at your local fish store to see if they are close enough that you could support their business instead of ordering it online." I responded, "That's a phenominal idea, Self! Why didn't i think of that?"

Ok, ready for this?

Wait for it...

wait for it....

$79.99

I asked the chick on the phone 3 times if i had heard her right. You know, that kind of price gouging really ticks me off.

I looked on drs. FS and the price for a 24" 65watt PC light (not the bulb, the entire damn light) is $62.89.

Edit: So i called back to verify it and got someone who knew their rectum from their elbow and it turns out the bulbs are only $52. That's only double wha ti can get it for online, instead of triple. Still doesn't exactly engender very good feelings, IMHO.

Yeah. They are high there. I was looking for a maxi-jet 1200 and I want to say they wanted almost $50 for them. You can find them online for around 10 bucks.

It really makes it hard to want to support them when they gauge you on dry goods and the live goods are kinda spotty at best. I think i'm going to stick with special ordering and trading. More cost effective and i get exactly what i need.

I went with marine depot for my lights. Needed to get some other stuff any way. Getting 4 65watt daylight PC's, 2 250watt halides for backups, and a new 60gpd membrane for my RO unit. for 178 bucks and shipping's free.

Can't beat it. I'm one for supporting the local business, but they've got to at least be reasonable, and like you said, the livestock is not up to par there either. Their setups and husbandry with their animals is not quite up to snuff in my opinion.

I went to buy a standard daylight fluorescent from them and it was almost $30.

I went to Lowes and got the same temp rating bulb for $4.95.

Oh, FYI all, marine depot has koralia 4's on mega sale for 38.39 each (i'm getting 4 of em :) ) and also they have the "Algae Free Sure Grip 50 Magnetic Powerhead Holder" which i had never seen before for 5 dollars off. (heh, ordering 3 of them :) )

Ok, i need to stop shoping now. Bills heading towards 400 bucks for my replacement compact flourescents. Heh.

I needed a bucket of 160g Reef Crystals. Didnt feel like waiting for shipping. Went to Fishman and I was told they would have to order and the price came out to $116 ! I told them forget it, I would order it on line for $31 from DFS. Check out the prices on the Koralia's at fishman; EXPENSIVE !

I had him price me a tank in there when I started. I thought wow maybe I will not be able to afford this it was like 500 dollars for a rr 75. I then bought one from super pets in Peoria for about 300 dollars. and I took it home that night. As far as the salt goes that is insane. I was mad the last time because I forgot to print out a internet price and had to pay full price at petsmart It was like 42 dollars. You never know he may be ordering it from DFS and marking it up to you. Oh well I like to buy livestock local but as far as drygoods go I buy from DFS, Premium, and The Reef Stop. All those places will get to your door in about 2 days standard shipping.

well, i ended up not buying the koralias, as my bill crested 500 bucks, heh. Still, free UPS ground for anything over 175 is a pretty good deal, especially when it's 50-66% less than buying it locally.

yea I agree with this completely, Looked at maxi jets over there for the price they want for 1 you can get 3 shipped off of ebay. they wanted over $20 for piece of kenya that had droped off the main tree. Maybe when/if they realize that they could have the support of a local club they will drop there prices. JRE's does online price matching!! I make sure when I get something elsewhere of better quality for a cheaper price I let them know about it.

Johnny's will also ship items if you can't pick them up. I think I saw where either Johnny or Benny posted that somewhere on the BNARC forum. I think they ultimately want to set up cabability to order from them online and have the item shipped. I believe this is the case on both live and dry goods

Heck, when you talk about thoes prices you can afford the gas to drive to Johnny's and do some shopping while your threre. I know John orders weekly. So if you need somthing he can have it for you when you get there.
