Yes, RBTAs appreciate feeding. I used to feed mine defrosted krill at least once a week.
If you want to encourage splits, I've found that infrequent water changes, along with adequate feeding, seems to do the trick. What I mean is, if you are currently doing weekly water changes, wait and do one in 6 weeks. If you don't get a split, wait a month before doing another water change. Make sure you are feeding meaty food once a week throughout.
I found that I used to get fairly regular splits when I was feeding and doing weekly water changes, but when I slacked off and did a water change once a month (or less), I suddenly had a higher number of splits (within a day of the water change).
Also, I definitely have less splits, now that I'm not target feeding the clones.
