Ross' Massive Build

yes, the weak area of the wood is the sides or ply. Thats were water will try to penetrate and cause problems down the road. Marine ply is quite a bit more, but you will never have to replace it

Ya I did some googling and the marine ply does look pretty rugged..

I would look into kiltz paint, it is a great water proof paint.

as for the stryofoam, I would not use it on tanks with rims, it can actually cause more damage to the tanks.

Never heard that about styro-some use the foil insulation sheets that is much less subject to compression, but Ive always used the 1/2" white stuff in the back of the lumber area at Home Depot.

Regarding paint, best to use an oil based paint, usually outdoor paint is already oil based, or a marine or coastal exterior will work. Modern paints are 2-1, but you just want multiple layers for sealing.

I never heard of a problem with 1/2" Styrofoam being a problem. I have it under my 240 & all the tanks in my current fish room. I purchased my 4' x 8' Styrofoam at Home Depot.

A lot of over kill with the marine grade plywood. If you have a lot of plumbing problems with leaks them maybe but on this build I used Kilts 2 water base primer & Dunn Edwards semi gloss paint. On the last build I used 3 coats of water base Varithane polyurethane.

You mean by putting pressure on the bottom glass panel?

I have always heard this is the problem. I've always put pads under tanks, glass and acrylic. Never have had a problem. Leak free since 1965!

I currently am using a foam board from HD. It's about 1/2" thick, white with foil on one side. Both 10 g and 20H tanks leave about a 1/16" impression in the foam. I don't see how this could push up on the bottom glass unless I left a rock UNDER the tank when I set it up! :lol2:

I've also seen pics of a Discus breeders build. The glass tanks were only supported on the ends. No points of contact on the long sides at all.

Maybe the tanks are stronger than we think?

I m curious if you had tested the strength of those racks. From the picture i see 5 tanks so i am guessing 1000lbs. I thought about those yet I want to get pallet racks which hold several thousand pounds. So I am looking forward to your build so keep posting

I have those racks. they do make different width racks though. Mine are the 24" wide by 72" long and they are rated at 2000 per shelf.

4 gallons of paint, about 12 trips to Lowes and weeks worth of work later..

the plumbing is ready to commence!

And new livestock..

Can I ask what this build is for, is it where you work or your collection?
Many thanks and it looks absolutely great!
