ROX 8 carbon

With the recent article on lignite carbon and HLLE I'm re-visiting ROX 0.8 carbon. From a quick read it is acid washed and treated, end product is very little dust and great pores = very effective product.

The concern I have is how small the carbon is, mostly will it pass through the sponge on my reactor.

anyone have experience with this?

for folks using how often are you changing? Rumor is that you can run 1/3rd cup / 50 gallons compared to 1/2 cup per 50. any thoughts?

thanks!

1/3 cup /2.66 oz / 76 grams per 50gallons. They used 200grams unwashed lignite per 50 gallons in the Coral Mag study.
Rox is small but does not grind up. I use it in a TLF reactor and added an extra thick piece of sponge at the top and have no problem with it escaping. I also use it loosely packed in fine mesh bags in a canister filter. There is very little dust during the rinse. Run a gallon of water through the reactor into a bucket and it should be completely dust free from there on.

ROX is definitely great carbon. I started using it 3 years ago on Toms recommendation and I've been really pleased with it. I use 1/3 cup per 50 gals (1 cup total for a 150 gallon system).

Normally, there is very little dust. I do notice more towards the end of a package. I rinse it with 3-4 gallons when I change it (roughly every 4-6 weeks). I run it in a BRS reactor. There is quite a bit that gets worked into the sponges, but I've never noticed it getting out into the sump.
