Thanks guys

You guys think I could get away with a Alpha 170 for a 180gal mixed reef tank? It'll be moderately stocked..

The price difference between the 170 and 200 is a little hard to swallow.

An Alpha 170 will handle a 180gal system with no problem. These skimmers are much bigger in person than what a lot of hobbyists expect.... then they open the box! :)

Pran - Take a look at the Canon Digital Rebel XS, XSi, or even a used XT or XTi. For a $500 camera you will be taking some amazing photos. The camera is absolutely worth every penny!

Thanks Jeremy. The tank itself will be 180gal, and figured I'd utilize a 55 gallon tank as a sump. Perhaps add a fuge in the future. The volume of water would be exceeding 200 gallons in this instance, but want to keep things simple...

I've been in the camp of always getting oversized skimmers, but the inconsistencies of skimmate head (skimmer shutting down as organics are skimmed out) has really had me puzzled. I think I want a skimmer that is more closely rated for my actual water volume and get a consistent skim.

I can not stress enough how refreshing it is to read that second paragraph! I wish more hobbyists would have this same line of thinking when it comes to skimmers, it only makes sense.

hi,
after two months of use my alpha 200 asks for help in finding the right setting.

I tried with different levels in sump from 23cm to 25cm closing widgpipe maximum of 20%.
always dirty with the different settings under the base of the glass (between the screw and the base) is normal ?
the glass contains approximately 2 cm after 10 days, where am I wrong ?

now have 24 cm sump widgpipe closed at 20% pump is always mounted on standard 19mm neck (?!?)

There isn't a 19mm nozzle in length. Can you post a picture please.

Thanks,
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy, here are the pictures, the foam is 1 week, 19 mm diameter, I hold in my hands at 55mm long and 19mm diameter cup without gray pvc

thanks

Looks great actually, the only thing that I would recommend you do is to slightly close (approximately 1/16 of a turn) on the wedge pipe, slightly raising the water level. Again, only 1/16 of a turn on the wedge to the closed position, and this will do the trick.

Hi Jeremy I would not have made a mess with the nozzle, NOT mounted on the pump have 19 mm (internal) without PVC cup, 17 mm with PVC cup .

one mounted on the pump I have not measured is the one in the picture.

Widge the pipe is now closed at about 15-20% I have to close more?

the level in sump is 24cm to what I have to raise it?

not properly mount the 19mm tube without pvc cup to increase the flow air / water?

thanks in advance

I finally got my 300 hooked up to my system and have tons of micro bubbles with the wedge pipe wide open and the thing overflows within seconds:( I think it is in 9.5" water.

mine keeps overflowing with water or not making enough bubbles, its a 200. I try to adjust the wedge pipe and it all looks good but a few mins later overflowing again????

ok, I got mine under controll!!!! Whew. It is now sitting in 8 3/4" of water and the wedge pipe is open about 1/4 of the way. It is still pretty light skimmate but hey, the system has around 210gals of new water. I think i'll post some pics tomorrow!!!

Setting up a 300 fowlr will the alpha 250 be big enough and if I decided to go full reef will it be adequate? Also will be using a 75 gallon tank for the sump.

I'm looking at picking up a alpha 170. I keep seeing this re-occurring problem, surging issues. Is there something I should know about this skimmer before dumping $800 on it?

Just close the wedge pipe to about 25% - 30% closed. Make very small adjustments in doing so, and let it set for at least 48hrs before making another adjustment. This will do the trick for you.
