As long as the block and impeller assembly are completely free of calcium / magnesium deposits, you're fine. Make sure the bearings are not offering any resistance either, by sand or other debris in them.

Jeremy what do you recommend for a good starting point onthe alpha 200 ?

1. water depth (right now @ 10")

2. water inlet/venturi adjustment (right now @ 1.5 turns)

3. wedge pipe (right now @ 60% closed)

The sump depth looks good (note sump depth, NOT water level inside the skimmer, sorry for stating, but I've had that get confused before). The venturi should be 2 - 2.5 turns out from closed, no more than 4 turns out. The wedge pipe setting will be dependent upon how wet or dry you want the skimmate. Adjust it to about 1" below the bottom of the collection cup and leave it there for 4-5 days and see if you're happy. If not, either open it very slightly or close it very slightly, and let it go again for another 4-5 days.

Just got a 200 for myself. Got it installed and working great so far. Here are some pics:

The display tank is 180 gallon with light bioload currently. Skimmer is at about 9.5 inches depth of water. The venturi adjustment is two turns from closed.

Have couple of questions:

How often do you guys clean this beast? I have upgraded from asm g3 which I used to clean once a week pretty much. With the collection cup threaded to the body, it is not easy to remove it once a week. Does everyone drain the gunk using the outlet provided for the purpose?

If you see in the first picture you will notice that the outlet to drain the collection cup is below the sump height. I am wondering how to run the tube outside the sump so that I can collect it in a bucket. Any ideas?

Any other tips & suggestion most welcome.

Glad to be part of this club!

Jeremy, I bought the Alpha 170 from you guys awhile back but my Red Dragon pump says Red Dragon 1000 on the side and not the 1500 as advertised on your site. What is the difference and is it possible for me to get the correct pump, the 1500 from you? thanks

You have the right pump. I have been seeing sites show the 1500 but the correct pump for the 170 is the 1000, same block as the 1500 just tuned down with the pinwheel and ventura. I have a 170 with the 1000 and it is the correct pump.

This is straight from Premium Aquatics website:

# Alpha 170
# Capacity 40g - 200g
# 6.75" Base Plate
# Pump: Red Dragon 1500
# Airflow / Waterflow: TBA
# Footprint: 12.5" x 7.75" (Could be closer to 11.5" if you
cut the silicone coupling down)
# Height: 23"

Also, I have set it to the recommended settings from this thread, 9" of water, 2 turns open on the venturi, water level in the skimmer where the head and body screw together, but my foam only reaches up in the neck to where the bottom of the collection cup is. Do I need to raise water level with pipe, open the venturi more, or need the 1500 pump? Jeremy?

OneReef - you do have the correct pump.

I would raise the water level up with the pipe a couple of inches. If your skimmer is new it could still be breaking in. I have the 170 and it just gets better with time. Do not make too many adjustments without letting it go a few days in-between.

Not new, had it about a year

Hi,
im Joe Vinent a new member1
I got the Royal 200 with the Red dragon 1500, My questions to you how long it will take for the skimmer cycle for a lack of a better word?

Joe, every system is different on how long a skimmer takes to break-in. There are many variable that play into this, but I have seen brand new skimmers start skimming within 30 mins, while others have taken 1-2 weeks.

I do not recommend any type of vinegar bath, or anything else for a new skimmer, just plop it in your sump and plug it in. That's the quickest way to get it up and going. HTH!

Quick question. On my 170, right where the venturi airline feeds into the riser tube, some water is leaking out of that hole around the airline. Does that matter? Should I silicone it up?

Which port are you talking about, the small grey ozone port?

there is a hole in the side of the red riser pipe that the airline runs through to get it up to the silencer. Where the airline tube goes through that hole is where I am talking about. It is right above the white "T" PVC water outlet.

I just took the motor apart...not too bad inside no buildups...

i did notice a tiny piece of shell or something in the impeller wheel...would this have caused the large decrease in air output?

I removed it and now soaking in vinegar...

Ok I was able to get it back together without damaging the ring.

I forgot how much air this pushes. Now cleaned it's a beast again
