Royal-Exclusiv / Vertex Cone Skimmer Club

Glad to hear Larry! Also, it was nice to finally meet you face to face over the weekend!

OneReef, slightly angle the tube downward, and this will help some. You might still get a very small amount of water coming out of it, which does not hurt performance at all.

skimmer setup feedback

Hi all,

I have been using Vertex 200 for about a month or so. Pl. see the video of the skimmer running:

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lbQ4naxkXOE?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lbQ4naxkXOE?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

I am not sure if the skimmer is running at an optimal setting. It seems to be pulling gunk just fine. I see a severe algae bloom in the DT since hooking up the skimmer. I understand there could be many reasons why there is a algae bloom, but my primary concern now is that the skimmer is not at its optimal setting.

Can someone pl. help?

Thanks
Arvind.

Do you have the venturi turned 2 turns yet? I don't know why you are getting so much bubbles though out of the red tube. I only have water come out of that.

Sorry for jumping in to this thread but i have a question. I just got a Royal exclusive 200 protein skmr. in your experience what is the most efective water level for the skimmer?
any input will be great.

Yes, the venturi is almost 2 full turns. Also the Skimmer is at 9.5 inches of depth.

The microbubbles bothered me initially, but I am ok for now since it doesnt reach the display tank.

aravindk,

You have way too much water flow = restricted air flow. A couple things to check....

1. Make sure you are at least 2 full turns out, and if so, go to 3 turns out.

2. Make sure the venturi, air line, and air silencer (muffler) are all completely free of blockage.

You should not have any air bubbles at all coming out of the exhaust.

Thanks Jeremy. I turned the nozzle to three full turns but still didnt help the waterflow/bubbles. Any other ideas?

The riser tube is too hard to turn either direction. Is this how it is supposed to be?

There is a small white "set screw" on the white flange that the red wedge pipe goes through. IF you loosen this screw up, the wedge pipe will turn freely. I recommend keeping it just tight enough that you can still turn the wedge pipe in very small increments, and have the pipe stay without turning back.

Your venturi line / silencer is clogged with something to have that much water flow through the body. If you clean it out completely this should solve the problem for you. Note that you will have to open the silencer up, which can be somewhat difficult, just becareful with it.

I did loosen up the white screw. The red wedge pipe is still very hard to turn. I think I have to remove it and see if something is stuck inside.

Sorry if this sounds dumb: Which part of the skimmer is the silencer?

Is there an instruction manual available for this product? In another forum it was mentioned that the PA website has the manual but I couldn't find it. It will be quite helpful to understand all the different pieces of the skimmer.

I will track down a manual for you. I know there is one available now. The silencer is the larger bell / cap that sits on top of the wedge pipe, with the small pipe coming out of the top.

Hi Jeremy,

I pulled out the silencer and noticed some lime build up inside. I cleaned the wedge pipe and the good news is the wedge pipe moves freely. But the problem still remains. I still see micro bubbles coming out of the outlet. Any idea why this would be happening?

I stuck my finger inside to see if the wedge pipe is too small to handle the pressure. Even if the entire outlet is open, I still see tons micro bubbles coming out. In the video if you notice, the micro bubbles are getting sucked out from inside the skimmer. Is this normal?

The water inside the skimmer doesnt rise more than the neck of the skimmer. The venturi is two full rounds open.

Please help!

I adjusted the wedge pipe a little bit, now the water level is close to the lid on top, which is good I think. It has been stable since last night at that level. Hopefully that takes care of it.

The microbubbles still being pushed out. Does it anyway affect the performance of the skimmer?

I have not been on this forum for awhile and just realized that an adjustable nozzle was out for the 200. I love my skimmer already and can't wait to put this on it! Premium Aquatics here I come!

I had the same problem with micro bubbles too, but I think mines were due to cleaning my skimmer and after my chemi clean dosing. I let te skimmer run for a day, then I double checked if everything was clean and made sure that the red plastic tube was all the in both holes of the skimmer. I had massive micro bubbles because the red tube was out of the inside hole. Now it's running back to normal, just gonna let it go for another day before I adjust the wedge pipe. HTH some

Are there any type of additives that you use which could be causing the skimmer to go crazy?

I know what the air draw is rated on a 170 but does anyone know what rated water flow is with the 170's red dragon 1000
