Well, here comes the first storm of the season...

Might be a good time to break out your Generator and warm it up.

I fire mine up once a month, put a load on it and let it run for at least an hour.

I put it in my Outlook Calendar so it reminds me every month.

Good info about the inexpensive generator Guy thanks. Are those available locally? And good use of Outlook to remind you to fire your generator up to keep it functional.

Honda seems to have a lock on being the quietest.

Not having a generator or disposable income to buy one, my current plan should the power go (heaven forbid!) is to take a 12v battery of my boat and hook up my 12v inverter to it. It will allow my vortech to push water around at least, though I won't be able to heat or run lights. Certainly not even close to ideal but better than completely stagnant water.

I bought the backup power unit for the Vortech, Generator is for the rest of the system, and maybe some lights, or whatever.
 
$20 battery air pumps that come on when power is interrupted work well for those that can't afford a generator. I have them on all my maintenance tanks.
 
having lived in the middle of the redwoods in humboldt county, i have had my run-ins with unexpected power outages more often than id like to recount! :)
and being that i was so far from civilization, the power would sometimes be out for days, not hours. i remember one new years eve the power went out and didnt come back on for almost a week. i lost my mandarin and a reeeaaaaalllyyy cool acan during that outage :'( sad times...
but the rest of the tank miraculously pulled through.
all i did was wrap the tank in a comforter to keep the heat in and i used a baster to manually circulate the h2o every couple of hours religiously. it worked for the most part (minus the poor mandarin and the poor acan :( )

He's got a point. I'm not sure I'd go as far as creating a code to send to people so they know I'm not drunk texting them, but having a plan is a darn good idea.

I know we are not used to things like that guy that was without power for 10 days here, but it does happen in the worst of storms.
