Ryshark's SPS Peninsula Tank

Looking good, thanks for the update. I recently got a new Lee Mar tank with Atlantis stand and noticed the same thing - the veneer on the side panels is thin; I need to add some plywood too.

I'm going to hit you up once my tank is ready for SPS - I need to know who hooked you up with that Sniper bubblegum milli - that's a sweet piece and one of my favorites!

Thanks sahin and 4bruc!

Jmason- Yep, very thin. I also had a couple corners of my stand on the bottom come slightly unglued. I took the measurements of the inside of my stand to Home Depot and they made the cuts for me. I even made a mistake on one measurement and they told me I could return the entire cut board and they would cut a new one for me. The customer service at the HD in my area is like none I've seen anywhere else.
Let me know when you're ready to get the milli, I'm pretty sure the guy I bought it from would be happy to sell you a frag too.

I hope everybody had a Merry Christmas! I haven't purchased any coral since Reef-A-Palooza back in late October because I want to beat a Hair Algae problem that's really starting to P me off. It's not completely out of control but definitely needs some attention. Plus my acro colors could definitely be better. I decided that my 2x MP40s may not be enough flow for a peninsula style tank with no powerheads on one end of the tank, so I ordered 2x Jebao WP25s on a Twin Controller today. These powerheads in wavemaker motion should really help with the amount of detritus that builds up quickly in my rock and also provide more flow for my sps. I also ordered a GFO reactor today, even though my Phosphate and Nitrate always text 0.00. I'm assuming that the GHA is eating up the nutrients and that's why I'm testing 0.00. Plus, my glass gets a light dust on it every single day; so there must be PO4 and Nitrate in there, right? I will get the GFO reactor from will call pickup today and get it running this weekend. I hope that helps!

I would also run GAC either in a reactor or mesh bag. It will help find off the hair algae.

Post up a pic of the extend of the hair algae; its a part of the process, and when its gone you feel good everyone you see pic of how bad it used to be.

I feel your pain, my tank is on 4 months right now and hair algae is starting to get the best of me. I've been running gfo for the last few months now, but it's still growing strong. I know my fish additions and heavy feedings aren't helping.

I hope it subsides sooner rather then later, but it is part of the process.

I good way to help get rid of the Algae is to run your MP40 on constant and at full power. Install the foam filters on the power heads and start scrubbing the rocks with a toothbrush. The foam pads will pick up the suspended hair algae in a few hours of circulation. Then turn off the MP's and pull the wet sides out with the foam. I bag them inside the tank just so no hair algae comes off.

I've done this twice now. Works pretty well and helps cope with the HA.

Looking good and keep up with the updates :)

I didn't know that GAC can help with GHA. Thats a good idea, with the MP40s to clean up the floating algae. I will see if I can find the foam pieces.

My GFO is hooked up now, I started very lightly with only 1/2 cup of the GFO by Aquamaxx. I think this coming weekend I will bump it up to 3/4 or 1 cup.

Give Algaefix a try. I've used it a couple times when I couldn't get rid of hair algae and it worked flawlessly. I didn't lose any coral/SPS and the hair algae never came back. When I tried to fight off hair algae with GFO it did little if anything - the Algaefix took care of it within 2-3 weeks... trust me

I will definitely keep that in mind, thank you. If I don't see any improvements within the next couple weeks with GFO and more flow to keep detritus suspended, then this will probably be my next plan of attack.

Basting your rocks every night for a week before lights out will help get the sequestered nutrients out and feed your corals. Bump your mag up to 1500 Add some Banded Trochus snails and they should keep it under control .Was advice given to me by advanced reefer in my area and it worked very well. I also would put the snails right on the worst areas to rid it faster. Be care full with GFO you can bleach your acros without much warning. I haven't battled hair algae In along time now and baste weekly with my water changes I dont run any GFO or carbon and have happy acros!

I baste a couple times a week and I think adding the extra powerheads help keep the rocks cleaner of detritus. I'm running 1-gram per gallon of the aquamaxx gfo, per the instructions on the jar and see no difference yet, I'm even still getting the dusting on my glass everyday. I noticed that on the product page for aquamaxx gfo at marine depot, they suggest a higher amount. I already have like 15-turbos so I'm not sure if banded trochas will help, but I may pick some up. I can try the magnesium method too, then as a last resort I will have to get AlgaeFix as Jmason suggested, I'm hoping to avoid that but as every day goes by I consider it a little more.

Bump for update please. What happening with the tank. Would love to see how the coral frags are all doing. :D

Nice setup. Those rr pieces are awesome. I have a few of those myself and all I can say is that it's worth it! Colors are amazing once they are happy and growing.
