??'s about Reefpack 500

Do the two parts of this thing (i'm ignoring the top off part for the purposes of this question) function indepently of each other or by setting them up side by side like this made them dependent? What I guess I mean is does the water go into the filter first and be filtered and then be delivered to the skimmer to be skimmed? Or vise versa. Or does water just go into the filter and get returned to the aquarium, and water enters the skimmer and gets returned to the aquarium? Does that make sense? Text becomes quite cumbersome sometimes!

Also as I've never seen one of these things in person could one put a heater down in the filter section to hide it?

Thanks,

Marc

Hey Marc,

I just got a Reefpack 500 and have had it running in my tank for a little over a week. The two sides function independently. Meaning you could run the comline side alone without the skimmer and vice-a-versa.

I don't think there would be enough room in the filter side as the media is housed in a cartridge. If you are interested I could take some pics for you of it in the tank and PM them. Let me know. I am very please so far.

I am curing the rock in the tank and I have to clean the skimmer cup every day :) . I also like how the filter side skims the top of the water.

I have not hooked up the Osmolator yet. I have the sensors installed but just have not gotten around to setting it up for ATO. I also purchased the Kalk dosed which is sitting in the box at the moment as well. LOL /bonks self. Been really busy in the office and at home.

I really like the 500 because I did not want to run a sump for this application. I have it in a 75G.

Hope this helps,

Matt

Yes I would be very interested in any pictures you could pm me. I'm looking at this system because I don't want a sump this time around either.

Also, why are there two tubes coming out the bottom of the filter unit? I was thinking that if the water flow went from the filter to the skimmer that I could remove the media and just put a heater in there, that way I'd just use the surface skimming action for the skimmer. But since they function indepently of each of I guess that's gone ;)

Thanks for the quick response.

PM sent your way with some pics.

The tubes pull water in so water is coming from top and bottom. I like the design.

Sorry to hijack, but could you send me pics also? Where did you get yours from? I usually deal with Premium Aquatics but they don't carry it and would have to special order it. It appears the osmalator is hard to come by so I'm afraid I might have to wait a month or 2 to get it.

Also, how does the kalk doser work? I don't see a pump on it so how does it stay mised up?

I thought the magnet holder could not be used so close to the high level sensor? The manual says it should be no closer than 20cm. It does not interfere with it apparently. I have a 9005 and I am going to get a Comline Filter. It looks like they are glued together on the Reefpack 500. So you are able to attach the magnet to the bottom of the Comline stock, or is that a modification?

I think the magnet mounts on the comline filter require a small modification. The mounting nipples on the back of the filter have to be moved lower so the magnet mount can be fitted to the bottom of the filter.

When I ordered the Reefpack I told Roger I wanted to mount the setup to the tank with magnet mounts. He told me the small modification of the movement of the nipples is all it took and he offered to do it for me before it shipped.

Really dig the setup. Hope to have my clown fish moved over this week as well as some snails.

Would the magnet mounted that way on the Comline be able to hold it without it being attached to the skimmer? I want to mount them in separate corners. I am sure it is strong enough, I'll have to ask Roger to hook me up.

Basically, you set the magnet holder on the 3166 portion near the bottom and the one on the 9005 near the top. The dimples that the nipples glue into are already there, I have the nipples and the glue to do it, I can send you the nipples no charge, but I really recommend the Tangit glue to install them. It melts the plastic together and gives a very strong hold. If you want to do this on a 3166 on it's own, you need to put suction cups on the top nipples to steady it. For that matter you can use four suction cups but we all know how long they last.

Well I ordered mine last night from a store in Greenville. He has to order it so we'll see when it makes it here....but since my tank is still a dry box on the floor I don't think I'll lose too much sleep in anticipation. Maybe one day I'll finish the stand :D The good thing about being such a slow builder is that it allows me to actually save enough money to pay for the equipment before I need it.

So the magnet on the bottom and a couple suction cups on top. I don't have the 3166 yet, but plan on ordering one soon once I can get my hands on a 58. They are hard to find around here, which is strange since All Glass, or Central Aquatic, or whatever its's called now is right up the road from me. Do they even make Oceanic tanks in Texas anymore? I may just get a 40 breeder instead, cheaper and the same footprint. Shallower is better. I like my Oceanic 37, 24" is just not wide enough. Is the 40 breeder deep enough for the 3166? I notice intakes on the bottom, are they adjustable? When I do order it how can I get one that you have modded for the magnet?

Nope, Oceanic up and moved to Wisconsin. All the layed off employees started there own company though. Get the 58, it is a great tank, one of my favorite shapes. When you are ready let me know and we will work it out so it gets done for you.

My reefpack came in about 2 weeks ago, it was missing the skimmer cup but Roger dropped shipped that to house so I didn't have to drive an hour back to my 'local' fish store. Thanks Roger!

So now my question is for those of you who have this mounted with the magnets. How far does it stand off the back of the tank? That is I suppose how thick is the magnet mount? I've got an oceanic tank and with the rim and using the mounting bars it's wasting about an 1" to 1.25" of space from the inside of the glass to the back of the reefpack. I was hoping that springing for the magnets would reduce this wasted space....I also hate the way the mounting brackets look hanging on the rim.

Thanks,

Marc

Magnets stand maybe 1/2 that distance. from the back glass. It's pretty slick setup mounted with the magnets.

If you do end up using the magnets remember to make sure the one is mounted low on the comline side. I think there may be a couple "nipples" that need to be glued in there. You can see what I mean in the above pic.

Also, notice that the back of the filters pretty much line up with the inside lip of my tank (75G Perfecto).

Hope that helps :)

Matt
