Safe guarding fish against Vortech properller

Hi all,

2 days ago I happened to add 3 golden neon goby. And I realised, unlike some other reef fishes that sleep among the rocks. They do wonder around the tank during the "sleeping period".

Hence it prompted me if I should kinda wrap the Vortech with something like a mesh to prevent them from being sucked into the propeller while wondering around. I have seen some reefer here report lost of fishes due to the powerful suction.

Also, by wrapping the vortech, will the lack of suction create any negative resistance that might reduce its performance? (Technically it does I think :-) )

If has already implementing something like that, maybe you can add a photo to share?

Many thanks!

I have tried checking the cover you mentioned. But unfortunately, they are not listing on their website.

Maybe if anyone whom is using them can share a photo of it?

Tim,
Just wanted to thank you for the foam covers that I recieved today. I appreciate the good service.

Todd

that's bizzarre to say the least. I run mine flat out and have had no issues, and now that we have the WWDs, most people will take advantage of the fluctuating speeds, so this shouldn't be a problem much longer. I can't imagine putting a foam collar on mine. I would think a lot of stuff would get stuck to it.

i just lost all my fish because of a vortech. my puffer got pulled in and killed and he realeased his toxins and killed the entire tank. i was at work at the time and could not stop it. i am not even going to sell the vortech. its going straight to the garbage. i lost 4 year and thousands of dollars that i had put into the hobby

I'm really sorry for your loss! Did you have the vortech on "pulse" where it would start and stop or was it just on constant speed?

it was on a constant speed. at night i always kept it at the lowest speed setting. in the morning i would raise it a little.

Is the foam cover the thin grey sponge looking thing that goes around the wet part of the pump? I have lost two cromis and a cardinal. Nothing to major but they sure do get sucked right to the shroud.

Thanks for the info cdi919 (again, sorry for your loss).

Yes, it is just a little piece of thin grey foam/sponge and it fits around the sides of the wet part of the pump. It collects debris like crazy/has to be washed often in my tank. However, it doesn't sound like it is worth the risk of not using it!

I'd use those foam covers, they also serve a dual purpose of trapping a lot of crap that's floating around the tank that would otherwise just get flung back around.

I have blue tang, sailfin tang, chocolate tang, pair of true percular, longfin wrasse, supermale Lineatus wrasse, golden blenny and I run my vortech without fish cover. My fishes swim and touch the vortech many time without getting suck in or stuck.
My tangs even swim straight against the vortech output and pick at some stuff on the cover and let the pump water propel them backward.
