Sal's 100G Rimless Build

Finally decided to start up the build thread! So here we go!!!!!

For as long as I can remember I've loved aquariums.
My first was a small fish bowl with a betta that I would torture endlessly with a pocket mirror.
Soon after I saved up enough $ for a fresh water 10g with an Oscar,
a Pacu and a baby red eared slider.
Miraculously they all grew together in harmony for 4+ years with an upgrade
to a 50g but eventually the turtle got way to big
and had to be given away to the LFS and soon after
both the Pacu and Oscar died.
I was 12 at the time and decided to take a break.
Not long after the bug came back and a slew of freshwater set ups have come and gone.
Most recently (3yrs ago) a 150g with parrot fish a few other assorted guys.
Just a side note I come to find out years later my dad used to feed the
Oscar and Pacu food from the table most nights.
Im talking pieces of cold cuts and salami"¦.lol

Well life happens and I moved into an apt w/ my GF (now fiancé ).
No more room for a tank  or so I thought"¦lol
After some negotiating, debating, reasoning, promising, whining, bribing,
and finally proposing"¦.lol my gf gave in and agreed to let me do a set up in
the apt.
Got the landlords blessing and I was ready to roll!
This has been and continues to be a very slow build"¦
between starting a new business and planning a wedding my time is very
limited for fun stuff so bear with me guys.

The only place that the tank can go is up against a common bearing
wall so its plenty strong. Only downside is its kinda tight and there's a
window right next to it, but I will keep it as blacked out as possible. (will post a pic when I get home)

This is my first attempt at a reef tank so I did a bunch of reading on RC and jumped in!

After months of searching the net I found a used Glass cages w/ black silicone tank back in June.
It's a 48"Lx24"Dx20"H approx. 100g
(exactly the dimensions I've been looking for) starfire front & rimless tank!
The tank came with (2) 1.5" horizontal overflow box made by glass-holes.com.
It came pre drilled w (2) 3/4" return holes at the outer most edges and (2) 1.5" BH dead center

Please comment or jump in if you see something wrong or have an opinion on stuff etc"¦..

I figured I would start with making up a few batches of DIY rock. Rickets reef has some great Youtube video tutorials on the subject as well as a bunch of others.
There are a bunch of variations you can use to mix up your rock but I went with

(2) parts Crushed oystershell
(1.5) parts White Portland cement (Home depot)
(2) parts 99% evaporated rock salt (True Value Hardware)

A few bags of Play sand from Home depot, some molding / mixing containers, and I used some Quarry Red & Capt Blue PolyBlend to try and play with the color a bit.
You mix up your dry stuff (cement/oystershells) add some water to get the consistency of peanut butter. Mix well, add the rock salt, then place in your molds.

Let it sit for 24-48 hours under some moist towels.

Remove, rinse off sand, let sit in the sun for a few hours.

My first batch came out a little red but it's a learning experience

Second batch I ditched the poly blend and went with just the white Portland.
Put in your curing container for about 4-8 weeks. Doing daily freshwater changes the first 3 weeks then every few days then weekly unit you get a steady ph reading from the container.
You want the concrete to leach out what ever phosphates are present.

Hey Doc!....Thanks man!
I skinned the frame with 1/2" birch ply wood. The finish side is really nice, its a great material. But you may have spoken to soon.....may have screwed up the stain job....wont be able to tell till tomorrow tho.
Wish i would've went with 3/4" instead would have made life alot easier when door mounting time came around.
Kilz is a primer/sealer....thats the white paint on everything you see..
looks like this

I think im going to put the overflow in with the tank on its back so it lays flat till the silicone cures. To attatch it to the glass i was going to use this stuff

I'm going to be honest here.
Love the design and build of the tank. Nice work buddy.
But as far a the rocks goes, don't like the idea of them not being natural. Still it looks really cool. I guess I'll have to wait to see how things work out for you.

Thanks guys.....i hear what you mean, but i read alot of good stuff. the oyster shells are organic...lol
Its already made and cured so i might as well. Its going to be a while till it up and ready for live stock so hopefully if there are any problems they will show themselves befor then.

so this is where the tank will live....not the most ideal conditions but better than nothing.

A little time and just about anything can be cured!

The only reason I asked is because I had built a stand that was to tall for me to get in and out of.. Ended up being a real pain in my butt.

The stand that I built the first time was still a lot taller then yours. the second stand that I built is 35" high and it is perfect for me at 6'3". I don't need a stool to get in and out of it.

Your not the Sal Governale from the stern show??? are you?

lol no im not that Sal....I met him once hes a really nice guy
I hear what u mean about the height...and i will prob need a stool to get into it but the viewing height is perfect.....figured i would deal with having to reach in....more incentive to keep my hands out of the tank i guess...lol

ok so made some more progress...stand has been stained and for the most part done.
first go around with the stain not so good. I used a gel stain and didn't apply it correctly. I had a lot of puddling and dark patches even though i pre conditioned the birch. So i wiped it down with some thinner and started again best i could
