Just wondering what salt mix everyone uses, I use instant ocean and my alk is usally around 10dkh. I would like to get it around 8 or 9. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I use IO and drop alk with muriatic acid. It's been discussed many times on this site. Try searching for it.

Coral Pro is not going to have dKH under 10, let alone 8.

OP, Aquaforest Reef is usually in the 7.4 - 8.0 range.

I use coral pro and my DKH is spot on at 8. This value has always been very consistent

I use RC and drop with muriatic acid as well. I have been doing it for years.

Just measure Alk, then subtract desired Alk. Multiply this number by the gallons of new water, then multiply by .123. This will give you the number of mls to add to new water.

Is one muriatic acid better than another? Is it the type found at Home Depot to etch concrete and also to adjust ph in swimming pool?

Not in my experience. If you want you can buy hydrochloric from a scientific supply website, but it'd be a waste of time. None of my triton tests have ever shown any contamination that was caused by using muratic.

I use a bottle that I bought at ace hardware. It's maybe half empty and I've been using it maybe 18 months

As a side note I would strongly recommend aerating your water for 24 hours after adding the acid to allow the ph to rebound. It drastically drops immediately following the addition of the acid.

How much acid is required to drop the alk by 1 point for 1 gallon of saltwater?

Thanks

it's a pretty easy conversion but I'm on my phone. If you search reef central, I know I have typed this out personally over 5 times. It should be easy to find and a fella a few posts back explained essentially what you need to know.

here's what i posted a few months back...
The calculation for figuring muratic dose is as follows

Gallons of water treated X number of dkh drop desired X 0.123 = ml muratic to add

For example:

25 gal X 2dkh drop X .123 = 6.15ml of muratic.

This works for products purchased at the hardware or pool supply store. Go slow. You can always add more if needed. Aerate for 24 hrs before use.

AF Probiotic Reef Salt here, mixes within 15 minutes and is pretty dead on by the scoop included, and measures to what the tested batch indicates on the paper slip included in each bucket :)

Rea sea coral pro always mixes with DKh reading really high. I used to use ESV but the price was just too much after they discontinued 200gal box package.
I started using HW marine mix and I liked it, mixed around 8-9dhk , 430 cal , 1300 mag still kinda pricey though.

My LFS store has been selling 50 gallon bags of coralife salt for 8.99 though so I switched again to save some coin, it mixes at 9dkh 450cal and 1400 mag. Happy with it and the price.
