Salt Water Mixing Stations Let's See Them

I drilled a hole on the side of the brute can large enough to pass the plug through. Works for me

Thanks JBOD, the issue is no longer with the heater cable and its not even in the vicinity where water is dripping. I think I just have a bad lid not sitting properly.

Does anyone know if the Aquatec CDP 8800 booster pump can be mounted with the ports down, I need flow to go from left to right.

This link says a ceiling mount will cause a 15% drop, but not sure upside down is the same as a ceiling mount.

The pump may be mounted in any position. If “ceiling mounted”, however, with the pumphead
upside down, air entrapment may reduce the operational performance by up to 15% . Consult
Aquatec for ceiling mount solutions.

Salt Water Mixing Station

Salt Water Mixing Station

Sorry I have no pics to post. I set up two 20 gallon Brute cans on a wooden stand built to hold well over weight of water. Much like other stations I see here. Vertical w/ RO filling top can, then ball valves to allow to water to bottom can where salt is added, heated, stirred and sent to sump.
My question is this, the Brute cans have a rim on the bottom that leaves a gallon or two of water my intake line will not pick up. Anyone face that problem and fix it?

Add an elbow pointed down and it will create a siphon to get the rest out. I think i leave less than a quart in mine now after doing that. I had to actually extend the elbow to the opposite side from my bulkhead but same concept.

One question:
Is it preferable to empty the salt mixing barrel every time and rinse it with clean water or to keep it filled with salt water with a pump for aeration?
I'm concerned about leftovers in the barrel that would mess up the fresh saltwater when I try to empty the barrel after mixing and leave it for a week

Throw a pump or power head in there just to keep the water from being stagnant. I clean my barrels about once a year. I always have saltwater in the barrel ready to go. As long as there is saltwater in there moving around, it will be fine till you use it. It takes me approx a month to empty my 55 gal barrel. I only fill it when it's almost gone. I haven't had a problem in 4 yrs doing it this way. :fun4:

I keep 20 gallons of circulating saltwater going. Every other month I work my way down to an almost empty barrel. Then I do a vinegar/water rinse and scrub for both the barrel and the pump. Keeps everything nice and clean and no deposits on the bottom of the Brute.

Ok I have a question. I will be building a twin 30g RODI / SW Mixing station this week. How do you guys drain the SW completely? Example...

I mix up a 20g batch of SW and I drain 20g from the display tank. I will have slightly less than 20 g that can drain. meaning there will always be some amount of SW left in the drum. Does this hurt anything?? or do you always have some amount left that you just add into the next batch? Yes I am new to saltwater.

Ok that's what I needed to know. I think I will just keep the mixing pump on a timer for like 15 minutes an hour if I have any leftover SW.

does anyone else have an issue with the water cycloning into the drain as the barrel is drained down? this causes my pump to pull air into the intake and causes micro bubbles. starts to happen with the barrel is about 1/3 full.

I put an elbow pointed toward the bottom of my container. That get MOST of the water. Shortly after a water change, I fill the saltwater container back up and mix the next batch so I always have it ready. So...I drain just under 30 gallons when I do a water change, always have a bit left over (top off as needed) and just add more RODI to it afterwards.
Hope that helps.

I do the same. If I'm mixing 15g's of SW for a WC, then I'll actually make about 16 and drain 15 from the tank. I figure just under a gallon remains in my 30g storage tank.

Very nice and different! I like it...will need to find some stores that would have old water softener units like that. I like the easy flip up lid and how you did the wiring!

That's basically how I run my 55. I have a pump set to circulate the water with a few valves and an outlet a few turns later the pump pumps water for the water change

Plumbing inside the Water Softener, Turn One valve and close the Other, and it circulates the water. Other way around and it pumps the water out.

Heater and Temp probe are inside the Black Tube (Protects it from when I dump the Salt in)

Easy flip up lid to pour in the salt
