Samsung Galaxy Camera

I have a nice DSLR camera but I recently got a Samsung Galaxy Camera. It is 16.9 megapixels and has expert mode where you can adjust shutter speed, aperture, EV Brightness, and ISO. I have AI Vega LED's. Can anyone recommend good starting settings for these functions available to try to get better pictures. I am just a novice and I know it all depends on what I am trying to do but is there a good starting point and then I can adjust from there?

OK, at first I thought you were talking about a tablet or cell phone, but I guess Samsung now has an actual camera called the Galaxy. First off, I think you're still going to be far more successful with your DSLR. It's not all about the megapixels. The size/quality of the sensor and the quality of the lens are far more important. That said, if you choose to still use a P&S camera, with the settings you have available, it's really going to be the same considerations as a DSLR. If I'm shooting moving subjects, my first concern is setting a fast enough shutter speed to capture the action, followed by aperture to give me sufficient depth of field, sacrificing that as necessary if it's going to drive my ISO too high. For non-moving subjects, my first concern is setting the aperture for the correct depth of field. Assuming you're using a tripod, you can then keep the ISO nice and low and adjust the shutter speed as required for the exposure.

All of this takes practice as well as an understanding of how shutter speed, aperture and ISO affect your final product. I hesitate to try to give you any sort of all purpose setting, because at that point you may as well just throw the camera into auto mode. There are simply too many variables that I cannot predict for your tank.

Thank you very helpful. I am trying to avoid the bright blue color in all of my pictures. Probably a white balance issue which I can not change on the Galaxy camera like I can on DSLR. My eyes make the adjustment and I see amazing things. Getting it to look like that in a photo is another thing.

Here is a good article "Camera Settings Explained: Going Beyond Auto Mode" in the Reef Hobbyist Magazine ---> http://reefhobbyistmagazine.com/magazine-tiled-q1-2014-34.html

This article is a "part #1" so there is more to come in the future on this topic.

Looks like the galaxy cannot shoot in RAW (based on a quick check), so I would stick with the DSLR. Shoot in RAW and adjust the color to your liking with post software. You can also adjust white balance in camera, but to me that is more time consuming.

Thank you! I know DSLR is the way to go. I was just hoping for quick shots I could use the Galaxy. It is a WiFi camera so I can email and text right from the camera. Would be slick when sending people pictures of coral.
