sand bed ?

Putting an order in for aragasnow sand and I have a 180 gallon tank
The bags are 30lbs each.......how much for a 2" sand bed?

Just sprinkle in enough sand to dust the bottom. One 10# bag

Can I ask why just a dusting across the bottom of the tank?....I'm about ready to order sand for my 90 gallon DT...was gonna go with the Crystal Reef PURE WHITE ARAGONITE Aquarium Live Reef Sand ...thxs Lee

I'm in Lee's boat. I'm about to begin my 90g build and was thinking of using 40 pounds of live sand and 40-50 pounds of base rock. I have some nice purple rock to seed that I'm going to transfer from my 37g.
Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance.

I have a standard 55 (48x12x24). I purchased 2 30 pound bags. It took 1 1/2 bags to have a 1" floor. I used the aragonite material (not live). That was 2 months ago and now it is covered with little critters. No need to spend the extra money for live. JMHO

Your such an enabler Haha....but I actually like the look of more sand when my tank can look as amazing as yours I'll siphon little by little but until then :bounce2: plus I want to give this sand a go its bright white with pink flecks sooooo pretty lol

I guess there's no need for live sand. Saving $ is good. I'm with Shawna- just like the look and can always remove it as time goes on.

I always figured the live sand thing was a marketing gimmick. How could it stay live in a sealed up bag sitting in a warehouse and then a asyore shelf. not to mention possible temp changes all over the map. I have never used it. just my 2 cents

My advice on RC is usually intended to fast track folks to an aquarium that looks amazing.
Healthy critters make for an amazing looking aquarium. IMO/IME just do a little dusting of that sand- one inch or (preferably IMO) LESS. Save money. Less maintenance. Healthier environment for reef critters because less area for fish poo to accumulate.

Done with the live sand idea. I have heard of people using play sand after rinsing well. I've also heard that this sand can leach phosphates. Any thoughts about that?

all aragonite can release PO4

all aragonite can release PO4

get a small bag of Special Grade Reef/ Sea Floor and call it a day.

critter poo is the main source of PO4 in reef aquaria. It's accumulation is to be avoided in a closed system.

I figure about 30 lbs of white sand should give me less than a 1/2 across the tank bottom...."cooked" base rock has been in the tank just over a week and its starting to turn like a caramel color on the surface...good or bad?....hopefully good...did not seed the base rock...should I?....
