Sand or no sand?

Evansville, Indiana. (The southwest tip of the state)
tbs you have to pick your rock from nearest airport.. so assume you get like 30lbs of rock it would weigh around 60lbs.. Airport charges usually $90 per 100lbs or so..
So your looking at total cost with shipping to be $256.00 for 30lbs. If you can get someone to order with you in your area, reefclubs can reduce your price..

Unfortunately I don't think there are any in my area. Everything I found from googling is 7-10 years old. So it looks like there used to be stuff, but no longer. Do i guys I'm on the hook for whatever I need.

Man I just looked at TBS cost on a package. 21 hundred for a 190 gallon package. Holy crap, 190 hermit crabs, really? That seems excessive to me...

Ya, I think that sounds like the way to go. The package has some cool stuff in it, but I totally agree it's overkill. Just too much. Probably up to a certain limit the whole 1 per gallon thing works, but after a certain amount I imagine the ratio needs to change.

DSB, SSB, or BB can all work and all have their benefits.
You should set up your tank for the needs of the animals you wish to keep more than anything, some need sand beds, or a sps dominant tank may need very heavy flow that could create a sand storm if you had sand, so I would let that help in deciding what you do.
FWIW I have been keeping SW tanks for 30 years now, almost always w/ sand need anemones, not once have I had a crash due to my sand bed over those years

It really looks like it, and I'm excited about the idea of critters, even if it means dealing with an alien bobbit worm or tank smashing mantis shrimp, lol.

Thank you. I'm definitely going for the ssb, so medium/coarse aragonite seems to be the route for me

The hermits I use are tiny....is the reason we use them...they can get into every crack and crevice in the rocks to control algae...before it gets going...500 will fit in the palm or your cupped hand....pic below is of 25
and sometimes...I collect them smaller if available as little ones are what you want for the CUC.

OOOOHHHHHHH!!!! Makes perfect sense now. I actually went to my buddy's house. He said there was like 150 in his 100 gallon, but I couldn't find a single one. 1 per gallon doesn't seem excessive now, in retrospect.

Yes they are a very good member of the CUC...but when folks see the amount per gallon, they freak....but this particular organism is perfect for the application at one per gallon...
after they go in the tank, you will seldom see them, as they are busy in the recesses and cracks of the rocks...doing what they do...cleaning algae so you don't have a problem before you actually see it...they have had lunch!
