Sandbed wrasses in BB tanks

Hi all,

I've read that some people with barebottom tanks try keeping a container of sand in the tank for those wrasses who like to bury themselves at night. I'm just wondering if anyone here has firsthand experience doing this, and if so, how has it worked for you? Pics encouraged! :)

I don't really have a BB tank, but my maroon clowns have moved 90% of the sand in my 90g to a 12" x 6" area at the front left -- the area under all the rockwork and the entire centre & right front of the tank are bare now. I've tried moving it back, but they persist, so what I've got now is a small, deep area, a smaller shallow area, and mostly bare bottom.

My Potter's and Christmas wrasses seem to have no problem with the situation; every night they go to bed in the deep sand, and they're both a picture of health and happiness.

Some people set a plastic container with 2" or so of sand in the back of a BB tank and report success with wrasses -- basically I think if you give them a sandbox large enough for their needs, they'll find it and be just fine.

My checkerboard wrasse lived in QT for over a month, I kept a 2" tupperware container full of sand and he would just sleep in there for the night. The rest of the tank was bare bottom.

Ask on the sps forum. :)

Almost everyone there is BB and many of them like wrasses. I know lots of people over there use this technique.
