After way to many hrs on sanjays site I think i have come close to deciding on my new bulb upgrade. my tank is a 120x36x30 with Lum III's. I had 250 14k Hamilton w/icecaps e ballast in them and decided to upgrade to 400w. The ballast I'm going to use prob is the new sunlight supply Galaxy e ballast cheapest place I found it by 25%
http://www.plantlightinghydroponics.com/galaxy-400w-120v240v-electronic-ballast-p-1985.html
( BTW if anyone know what wattage usage they are at please tell me)
now the big one is I love the tank color of my Hamiltons but as we know they are very low par. I came down to:
Ushio 14k great par but its really closer to a 10k and needs actinics
Aquaconnect 14k great bulb/color but they cost to much for each
so unless someone has something closer to the white/blue of the hamiltons I think I'm going to go with the Helios 20k. Are they really that blue? From what Ive heard they are great bulbs but kind of dark compared to the 14k's. So if anyone has had or seen a hamilton 14k and the helio 20ks please chime in on your views if this is going to be the winner for me.

I have used a different't 20k and now use the ham 14k and do prefer the 14k adds a lot more light the 20k is too dark exp for the larger tanks. I may sup some aticinics for a dusk and dawn to get some lights on when the MH is not on kinda as mood lighting.

I would suggest the reeflux 10k or even the 12k. If you want any blue you wont be happy with the ushio 14k. I have always been a 20k person. The reeflux is the first whiter bulb I have been able to handle and I love the results in my tank.

I have run both bulbs in the 150W DE varitey in my helios double pendant. You are correct in that the helios 20K are blue. That's why i switched to teh 14K hammy's. I like their color and even run them in a 400W DE on a coral vue electronic ballast on my 400. Granted the PAR value is not all that great. I'd rather run the Xm 10K's but I don't want to have to add that much atinic to get a nice blue white color that teh hammy 14K already has. It dosen't seem to be an issue in my 72G bowfront but I only have a couple of monti caps in there as far as SPS go. The bulb does however make the purple colors come out more in my scroll coral.

On the 400 g, I am using mainly Natural Sun Light. The hammy 14K's are there more for the blue to bring out the colors in the corals. But it is a great looking bulb when teh sun is down at night and just the lights are on. I do not use any atinic on that tank, just the 14K bulbs.

Hope that helps some.

I absolutely love my 400wUsh14ks... most 14ks out there are closer to 20ks.

IMO... the 400wUsh14kSE by itself looks like a good balance of 10ks with actinics. If you want it bluer, a pair of actinics should do it for ya.

I also run 175wUsh14kSE on my office tank and like them.

Beware, the 150wDE and 250DE ush14k look completely different in my "testing."

The problem is my tank is 10ft long, 3ft wide and a 3 side peninsula tank. I figure I would need 4 - 48" vho's on the outside and 4- 24" vho's between my Lum III's or else I would see light steaks from the long view panel. That was the whole reason not go with a single white blue bulb or else I would just overdrive a 250w xm10k for 185 par instead of 120-140's par for the 400w 14k-20k .

The other situations is is the 400w are 1800w and the 250w with 8 vho's are 2200w. I wonder which would give off more heat?

we switched from XM10Ks on HQI ballasts to Ushio 14ks on E-Ballasts. (in LAIII reflectors). There are some side by side pictures in our build thread along with some number comparisons.

The comparisons (taken from Sanjay's web site) are here :

and the side by side picture is a couple of posts further down, here (always tough to get good lighting comparison shots.. but it is clear enough to see the difference)

HTH :)

I have a 10 foot tank. It's 120L x 36W x 29T. I use 5 LA III reflectors. And I use a mix of 10K and 20K bulbs. I don't have room for actinics. But I'm pleased with my lighting setup. I have frags that are growing into mini colony's on the floor of the tank.

I do use a chiller of couse. I use 4 400 MH and a 250 MH in the center of the tank, mainly for lps.

I like my 14k Ushio DE 250W its really a crisp white bulb and I supplement with 4 t5 blue plus and I love the color...

wow. the par rating on the Iwasaki's are very impressive. how is the color?

Very white with a small hint of blue. Not much blue at all. To me it looks white as a sheet of paper.

Certianly no yellow.

Expensive bulbs though

What is the reported CCT ? That will tell you how the color is, or at least give you a good idea.

EDIT : Ahh, cham beat me to it with his real life experience :)

This is a very interesting lamp that will soon be available to the reef hobby. In all my years of testing lamps, this is the one lamp that has in fact tested at around 14000K as advertised. It also has highest PPFD values among all the 175W lamps to go along with the 14000K CCT, which would make it a very appealing lamp to those seeing a lamp that truly satisfy the niche of being less blue than the 20000K and more blue than the 10000K, without sacrificing light output.

Here is from Sanjay's site :

Iwasaki 175W 15000K SE 1 EVC 175W Electronic N 87 14565 178 122 1.53 0.4899
Iwasaki 175W 15000K SE 1 ARO 175W Electronic N 86 13794 175 123 1.53 0.4966
Iwasaki 175W 15000K SE 1 Icecap 175W Electronic N 86 14565 165 122 1.53 0.5261
Iwasaki 175W 15000K SE 1 Advance 175W (M57) N 71 15215 189 122 2.02 0.3783

But I think I am going to stick with our 400w Ushio/BLVs :)

BLV 400W Nepturion 14000K SE 1 Icecap 400W Electronic N 152 13648 419 123 3.5 0.3649

although 86 PAR for 1.5 amps is pretty darned impressive, without a doubt :) (not to mention at 14k color at that :)).. There were rumors of an Iwisaki 14k 250w or 400w bulb, but I haven't read anything about it for quite some time.

HI ALL, I know that this is not the BUY/SELL forum, but I have the Iwasaki 15K's that are 2 months old, and I am going to be selling them and the spider reflectors. So if anyone is interested in them drop me an email or PM!!!

Oh and the Iwasaki's are nuclear bright in my opinion. They are not WHITE, but not BLUE some where in between, about 15K LOL!

I have had some great growth in just 2 months out of them, but I am more of a Blue kinda guy and want to try the Pheonix 14K 150watt HQI's.

Brian

I would go with the 400 but what I was saying for the atinic is to light it when the 400s are not on I wouldn't think you would need 8 to get coverage just to look at the tank but I will find out soon as that is what I will be doing on my large one it is 12' long 3' wide and just under 3' deep. I want to view this tank at least 15 hours of the day but not to run the 400s the whole time.
