sarasota reef club

If you do get it going again, let me know who your point of contact is.

I've put together a list of all of the "formal" marine clubs in Florida. The main purpose is to share information on special club events and to prevent scheduling conflicts between these events. FYI, the 2010 and 2011 schedules are basically done. ACROS has November both years for the BBQ. Also, we can use the list to share information about, manufacturers, vendors, speakers, etc.

Also, it may be a good idea to visit ORCA and SWFMAS meetings as well. Every club does things a little different. You may find that the "personality" of the ACROS club may be different too. i.e. ORCA does things for their club that don't necessarily work for SWFMAS (specifically, 4 frag auctions per year, we do 2)

In the club we were in up north, club meetings were held at a local community college, that way there was no depending on someone being willing to have a bunch of people at their house; if Mote doesn't work out, what about a room at the USF Sarasota campus?

Thanks Jeff Sue told me you would be chiming in with that info. And I think your suggestion is a good one we should go see what the other clubs do. So who has a big van lol ...So seeing how your suggesting it and your the Pres of SWFMAS that must mean we are invited to your meetings as well. Brynkal awesome Idea would you care to volunteer to make a phone call to the college and see if you can get some information?

Sure, come on down. Although the tentative schedule for the rest of the year for SWFMAS is as follows:

June - Tour of Aquariums, various homes in Lehigh Acres, ends with a BBQ
July - First annual FL Keys collecting/snorkeling trip
August - guest speaker or Sanibel trip
September - guest speaker or Sanibel trip
October - Fall Frag Swap
November - ACROS BBQ
December - nothing formal planned, usually have some kind of informal get together

So, for the balance of 2010, we will only have one meeting at the Imaginarium (guest speaker). The Fall Frag Swap is too big for the Imaginarium, so we have it somewhere else. Usually, we have 4-6 meetings at the Imaginarium per year. The rest are spread out depending on topic or event. However, we have worked out a deal with the Imaginarium that the third Saturday of each month from 4-6 pm is SWFMAS. I usually send them a 2-month look ahead schedule to confirm dates. So, when looking for a "home" for the club, keep that in mind. Some clubs, have meetings at members houses and move it around. I believe TBRC does that. I know FMAS has their meetings at Plantation High School. Outside of that, I'm not sure what the other clubs do for meeting locations.

Yes, when I was coordinating with the other club Presidents, there were two months that were set in stone. November for ACROS (Brian's BBQ) and July for ORCA (SRC, every other year). We just worked around the rest.

Hey count me in too! I have some new bits to install a led system in my bio cube 29 hood might be a fun thing to do at a meeting.

I will be hosting the November combined ACROS/ Tampa Bay Reef club meeting here in November and other clubs from around the state are invited. The BBQ will be held at my place in Nokomis the 2nd Sat. in Nov. everyone is welcome.

Originally when we started Tampa Bay reef club many of us were from the Sarasota/Manatee county area, but the drive was a little much for some people so ACROS was started to keep things a little closer to home. Agu originally coordinated club meetings but when his scheduel changed, no one was willing to coordinate or volenteer to host the meetings so the club just sort of faded. IF someone would be willing to coordinate the scheduling of the meeting I am sure there is enough interest in the area to revigorate the club.

Tampa Bay reef club usually meets the 2nd Sat of the month but it will be the 3rd Sat this month (June). Everyone is encourage to attend the meetings, you do not need to be a formal member to attend.

If some one would like to volenteer to coordinate things please try to coordinate meeting dates so as not to conflict with Tampa Bay Reef Club meeting (2nd Sat of the month) so those of us who are members of Tampa Bay Reef club can attend as well as the Ft Myers club. I've already volenteered to host the November combined ACROS/Tampa Bay Reef club meeting, so just need to fill in the rest of the months.

Brian your Great I look forward to meeting you. I was suposed to call you today, Sue gave me your number, but things got crazy quickly today. Thank you for your post it does clarify some things I'm sure we have all been wondering about. I'm sure with your help and with the help of sue and jeff we will get this all figured out and make ACROS a great addition to the other clubs.

Charlie look forward to talking with you, feel free to give me a call any time between 1PM and 1AM at the number Sue gave you. I'm sure there is enough interest in the area of people interested in attending meetings, question is is there enough interest to cooordinate and host meeetings????

I would definitely be interested in helping out. I live in Venice and I also have a few friends that would be interested in coming/helping out.

I wouldn't worry about trying to have hosts for all 10 of those months rather try to tie into at least one of Ft. Myers special events and one of Tampa Bays special events or programs and one or 2 field trips say to Mote instead of trying to get a host for each of those months. That would leave only 6 more to try to find hosts for. That should be easy.

Thanks for stepping up brynkal your efforts are greatly appreciated. I think that the non profit thing is a safe assumption. Brian again thanks for the input and that's a great idea. So it sounds like we need to have some kind of Informal meet and greet in the very near future so we can start discussing our future as a group.

i just finished building a bc14 hood and will be constructing a bc29 for a friendstank
i am also building a 21X21 led setup for my cube so that would be something of interest to me

That's what we do. Our November meeting is always the BBQ. No December meeting. That leaves us with 10 to plan. One of which is always the Reef Conference in the spring and the other is always the fall frag swap. We started our own BBQ/collecting trip at the beach last year and it was a big hit. We plan on continuing that, so that cuts it down to 7 to plan.

FYI, the Fort Myers meetings are the third Saturday of the month. Special events and field trip may be on different dates, but they are usually announced several months in advance.
