Sargassum Angler Breeding

Venomous

New member
My female Sargassum Angler - Histrio histrio - has laid an egg mass twice in the last six weeks. Does anyone know a good method of deterimining the sex, obtaining a male, and successfully introducing the male for breeding? She's such a feeding monster that I would have to make sure she has plenty of food in her before the male gets put into the tank or she'll swallow him!

I'm not familar w/ any sexual dimorphism in this species. I also couldn't find any info at fishbase or wetweb -so if obvious- its not been written about.
these fish produce eggs frequently, and often in the absence of a male.

Also H. Histrio is a known cannibal, so its hard to say how to introduce the pair but i think it would be worth trying, and keeping your eye on.
BTW spawning of these fish is easy, the tough part is getting the fry to survive a long planktonic phase
good luck

I would put the female with another fish separated by an eggcrate partition.
When she swells with eggs,I´d remove the partition and watch for courtship or agression. After spawning, they should be isolated again, and the egg raft removed for incubation.

Thanks for the info.
Okay, I guess I'm a few days late in responding. I wasn't aware of the etiquette requiring a thanks within a specified time frame. I do appreciate the information, though.
