Sargassum Trigger Doing Barrel Rolls

SkullV

They Got My Number
Has anyone had experience with their Xanthichthys trigger fish doing barrel rolls before? I had never seen him do this until he went into QT (for Crypt) with the first dose of copper yesterday. He always rights himself, stays out in the open and has been breathing normally but I have noticed decreased appetite.

I saw one short sentence about a trigger doing barrel rolls on Wet Web Media and the "staff member" said that it was possible the trigger was bored or "bummed" as he put it.

Any info would be great. I would hate to lose this guy.

something like this?

If so does not look good...

Not like that, rolling laterally, like a barrel roll. I added some nutrafin cycle today just in case there was ammonia/nitrite bothering him even though the QT tank used a very well established mech/bio filter system.

He turned out ok though?

Turned out fine. Was actually spiraling through the tank like a football for a few hours, but hasn't done it since. A goofy reaction to Prazi isn't uncommon.

If the behavior persists I'd suggest switching treatments. Something is bothering your fish, and the cure may be worse than the illness.

Maybe hypo instead of copper?

it looks like he is showing off . thinking the the reflection is another fish . too cool .

I had a Scotts Fairy Wrasse do these barrel rolls, it didn't end well. This could easily be due to crypt in the gills, just a guess. If this fish was in your DT and does have an ich outbreak; I hope you have plans to treat all your fish.

All the fish were put into QT and started treatment with copper. All the fish other then the trigger are now dead.

Wow! Sorry to hear it. Was it a bad ich infestation? What kind of copper and copper test kit did you use? Do you suspect copper as the cause? I've always used SeaChem Cupramine and a SeaChem copper test kit on all my fish in QT; before going into the DT without ever having a copper-suspected death. But, because you lost ALL your fish; I'd suspect another cause, like ammonia in the QT. Possible? That's really horrible, again,so sorry to hear about it.

No ammonia, no nitrite, no nitrate, wasn't even up to the full dose of copper yet. I just let the crypt go WAY too long before treating and I think the stress of moving the fish to the QT killed them.

Sounds right. Ich can really do damage to a fish, via the gills, even before it looks like a major problem. I really learned the hard way that any parasite like crypt, needs to be treated ASAP.

The avatar fish was found dead in the hospital tank this morning. If I lose the trigger the FOWLR is getting torn down. Otherwise I'll find another Pinkface Wrasse.

Why not keep the trigger in QT and let the DT go fishless for at least 8 weeks? That will eliminate any ich in the DT. Then, QT all new fish and you'll never have this battle again. I don't know the % of hobbiests that have gone thru what your are; but I'll bet its a lot higher than many of us would like to admit. I lost a war with ich; but that was a long time ago. I hope you don't give up the worlds most wonderful & addictive (2 of my 3 kids would add "geekiest") hobby because of a setback.

Aw man that stinks. :( I hate when this stuff happens

That was the plan, but I let the crypt go too far before I treated for it. It had already gotten to their gills.

I am sad to say that the trigger has died as well. The fowlr is coming down and I am going to focus on my nano.
