school of naso tangs?

would it be possible to keep a small school of naso tangs in a 220 gallon tank?

i was thinking about 3 or 4 naso's

tanks foot print is 72"x24"x30"

I would pass, they just get really big and not just long but thick and wide. You could house one for a long time but i still would recommend a much bigger tank and at least 8ft of length.

all sites say 125 gallons...so um yeah

regardless of tank size...can they be kept in a school? thats the question

I'd say no unless you have a really BIG tank. My current 400G tank is 7' long and houses a pair of Naso tangs. I left them room to swim when I was aquascaping and they still semed a bit cramped.

But they are beautiful. My male is about 13" long with 3" long streamers and is about as wide as most peoples fish are long. My female is not far behind. I've had them for 2 years now and the previous owner had them for about 4. The Male was caught in Hawaii by a friend of his and shipped to him. ;)

Many sites under rate tank size requirements.
They tend to sell more fish that way.
You can have one, or maybe even two, if you scape for swimming space like blown has, but eventually they will outgrow it.
They get REALLY big.
Like blown says, even in his 400g he made sure to scape for swimming space.
And I believe the question was can you keep a school of them in a 220g, and most likely all exp reefers will say no way.

okee thnx :)

i was planning on a center pile of rocks with a swim thru cave, even space to swim between front and back

if anything outgrows my tanks i can always find a home for them with someone who has a larger tanks. giving away 13" tangs should not be too hard :D
i have a small naso allready

plain and simple one is fine for your tank. no more then that. My naso is about 13" and makes my 220 look small. Hence the reason I am setting up the 450 at this moment. sounds like you are going to do what you want, best advise is one is fine.

Ever trie to give away a 13" naso? It took me about 4 months of searching to find a home for my 13" Vlamingi tang. And the new home was found thru a LSF of a guy who is not even a member of RC. That and I gave him away.

Mine get along as they have grown up together. That dosen't mean that you can throw a bunch in and they will be fine. Each fish is different, just like you and I.

As for swimming space, my tank measures 7' long, 2.5' wide adn 3' tall. The front half of the tank is open along with the upper 1/3rd of the tank. That's a lot of swimming room.

Click on the little red house and you can see my tank progress and pic's of my tangs.

ok i'll stick to the one i have then

hes only 4" at the moment

yeah im not planning on too much clutter in the tank, not a massive amount of rock, just 100 lbs dead center to get a maximum amount of swimming room.
if i plan it out right there will be equal amount of swimming room front and back with a swim through cave for "short cuts"

can a naso be kept with a yellow tang? or is the yellow too small?

your tank is gorgeous. i love the rabbitfish

Reason #11 to upgrade to a huge tank - free fish. :)

I also have a pair of yellow tangs and a blue hippo tang in the tank with them. No problems at all. Matter of fact, I haven't had any problems with my Naso's at all. I think their size pretty much intidimates all the otehr fish so they stay out of their way. But the Naso's are just a pair of big babbies that like to eat a lot.

Try feeding your's some sheets of Nori, he'll like it.

is their a certain color of nori i should get??
ive been feeding the green and hes been turning his nose up at it.
i thought about trying brown or purple?
he eats the algae on the rocks and glass alot, but the algae sheet from the clip he wont even give it a taste :(

All the lipstick nasos I saw in Hawaii were always in pairs. Do they even school in the wild at all?

thats what i came across too. seems like no they dont school, and when they do its for a short time only from my understanding

guess i was trying to defy nature

mines too young to know the sex of it, so if i did get a second who knows if they would even be a match.
it does make sense to only keep one, its just their so darn cute and i thought they'd look hot schooling together :p

I use large sheets of nori from the Asian market that is used for Sushi. It seems to have a few different colors of Nori. My fish go nuts over it. But then again, I don't have any alage growing in the tank. If you do and he's eating that, better off for you.

As far as schooling, they generaly school when they are young juvie's. AS they get older, they will pair up. Mine spend about 75% of theri time swimming together. The rest of the time they are apart.

The young naso's I've had took a while to start eating nori, and usually after it was soaked a while.
I think most of my tangs didn't know what to think of dry algae at first, and of course they prefered anything fresh/growing.
Once they get used to it though, they'll be mowing through it.
