"School" of Regal Tangs?

I was looking at ClownReef's tank, and saw that he had 3 regal tangs in his 58. Do you think I could have a school of regals in my 135?

No way. Who ever has one regal in a 58g is crazy, 3 is just plain cruel. Regardless if they are smaller, they get big quick. I'd say atleast a 300g for 3 or so regals. You'll be fine with one in your 135.

What he said.

How about some yellow tail damsels? Same color scheme, about as likely to "school" in the long run as blue tangs, and stay nice and small....

Thanks for the help. Yeah, I kind of knew even before I posted that the answer was no, just wanted a concrete answer as a school of Regals is hard to pass up IMO. Don't worry, I'll only get 1 for my 135 (along with a Orange Shoulder Tang, if possible). Although I'm curious, when I upgrade to my dream 270 someday (72"L x 36"W x 24"T), do you think I could keep a school of Regals then?

Regal (Hippo) Tangs may school when they are juvenile, but as they age, they become quite territorial. One per tank is recommended, unless the tank is as big as a public aquarium.

UPDATE:

Also, i decided its not a proper setup for tangs...so back to the board for a new fish list.. I will be keeping my B&W ocellaris until i can find a NICE pair of percs..

GoSUV: Oh... I wish I had a tank the size of a public aquarium

Tddrtrex: Oops! I never got to finish reading it. Thanks for pointing it out.

So no dice even in a 270 gal?

i would say if you want a school of regals i your tank you could do it if you find some small babies but know that after about 6 months to a year you will need to get rid of all but one.

I have found regals to be quite peaceful together in larger groups, such as six or more, especially so when brought up together as juveniles. The only problem that I see is that they can get about a foot long and quite hefty, that is a lot of fish mass:) I don't think the aggression is a much of an issue as the size and mass....
In a 360 gallon tank I am sure you could keep six or more regal tangs......
I second the yellow tail blue damsel idea from SDguy, they are great little fish, same color scheme and a pile of them can be easily kept in a 135, but add them all at the same time:)

Well thats nice, thanks kodyboy. The biggest tank I'd be willing to do is 96"L x 48"W x 36"T, and I could definately keep a school of regals in that right? I think its gal. is about 700

I wouldn't even consider 6 regal tangs in a 360 gallon tank. Not for a second.

My tank is 8x3x3 (1' narrower than what you are proposing) and my one regal is the king of the tank. When he is swimming next to the desjardini, the tank looks full. These are big fish.

six regals in a 700 gallon tank would be fine.....with lots of other fish:) I am sure a shoal of 12-18 in a 700 would be no problem. Get them small and raise them up and I am sure they would be copacetic.
I see no problem with six in a 360 either......but to each their own.
If your regal and sailfin make your 500+ gallon tank look full they must be huge:)

They wont swim together in a 700gal tank if this is what you are looking for. You need a gigantic thousands of gallon tank if you want to see them swim together.
Considering this tank is 8', fish dont school where the lenght of the tank is only 8 times bigger than theirself. Its same as expecting 6 chromis to school in a 16" long tank. They prefer to be territorial than school.

So everyone agrees? I could keep a school in a tank 96 x 48 x 36?

No. I believe one person agreed with you. You need to understand that you don't have the capacity in home aquaria for them to "school", nor the incentive for them to do so.

While I believe six could easily live in a 360 and many more in a 700, I have never kept a group of full adults (12 inches or so) only groups of juveniles (under six inches). As juveniles I have had them group/shoal in 180s, but I do not know the dynamics of the full adults they could be different so I will have to defer to the other posters here on that.
I know adult yellow tangs will shoal in much smaller tanks than a 360, if you just want shoaling tangs these will do the trick for you.

Oh, I know that they aren't going to school. I would just like seeing a couple throughout the display. I guess I worded that wrong in previous posts. I don't expect them to school. I am pretty sure they'll prbably be as far away from each other as possible.

if you get a dozen or so for the 700 gallon they will shoal when smaller (below six inches-at least in my experience), but apparently when larger they will not. I do not know how long it will take for them to get too large to shoal, but I would guess a few years at least. I would think an eight foot 700 gallon tank would be more than enough room for 12 one foot tangs their entire life, but I never had a 700 gallon tank so maybe someone else posting here can chime in.
