school of yellow tangs

i was thinking of geting a 260 instead of the 180 i might bye because the tank is 8 feet long instead of 6 feet. I would like to do a seceral yellow tangs in this tank. i was wondering if this would be possibility in a 260 or is just a dream.

hopefully steve reads this i would really like your input. also if not a yellow any other tangs i could put in a 260 to form a mini school

No one knows if a school of yellows can go together in a 265

I currently have a 240 cycling. You could easily do 3 Yellow Tangs in a 260.

+1, I wouldn't hesitate to put 3 in. I've seen then swimming around in 3's before at LFS tanks. Looks nice seeing them together. Might be able to get away with more, I think that would be more of a bioload question, which would depend on filtration and other livestock. If I were in your situation, I'd probly try 4-5 smaller ones, but I'm not saying that is the best thing to do. 3 would be just fine for sure though.

The "rating" for yellow tangs says yes, that is enough space and the 8ft length will help you. Having said that, understand that you are really asking 3 fish that do not want to live together to do so simply because there is enough space. I have two in a 300 gallon. They are fine but one owns one side and one owns the other. Because these fish are the same body shape, they are prone to disliking each other.
It will probably work or you could save yourself the headache and get 3 tangs from different families - different body shapes = much less likely to fight.

dont tangs school in the wild? so wouldnt they want to school in tanks too. just a question. i know the tank is a lot smaller then a coral reef. but if you put like 5-7 wouldnt they be less likely to fight if they grew up together. sorry for not knowing, maybe after doing freshwater for 30 years i cant break the habit of more fish equal less fighting because no one fish gets picked on too much

That's a great question because I've seen huge schools of different types of tangs in the wild so it makes sense the more the merrier. Anyone have first hand experience?

i would guess the number might be bigger than a 260 gallon tank can handle bioload wise. but my whole system will be about 600 gallons . so maybe if you go 5-7 they will kill each other off, maybe the number is 12. i dont know anyone every try or see this work. i also heard from my fish guy sometimes he saw 3 not school sometimes they will school its all depends

I had 4 in a 75 before I upgraded tanks( D ),they were around 3'' long and got along just fine.They went into a 240 and never had a issue with them fighting.

do you think 10 yellow, 1 kole (can always put kole in 80 gallon frag), 1 hippo, 2 fairy wrasses, 2 clowns and 8 lytail anthies , maybe 2 belrous angels is a good stocking list for a 265 or is that too much

like i said 180 sump, monster skimmer, 57 refug and 2 80 gallon frag tanks.

I wouldn't consider putting 10 tangs in a 265 gallon tank.

I realize there are always those that say "go for it", but you have to consider the natural behavior of the fish.

That. You can't compare behavior in the wild ("schooling") to behavior in a tank.

too many, imo....i would do 5 yt, 1 hippo, and maybe a chevron.
