i am doing herbarium presses for my phycology class and i cant key out tropical algae because i only have a cold water algae key(norcal)
i was wondering the species name for
chaetomorpha
feather caulerpa
and razor caulerpa
thanks on behalf of humboldt state and me,ricky

Chaetomorpha is most likely either linum or crassa but you would need to look under a scope to tell. Linum looks like a straight string of sections while crassa will be more like a string of pearls under a scope AFAIK.

Feather Caulerpa= C. mexicana (most likely)

Razor Caulerpa= C. serrulata (most likely)

Grape Caulerpa= C. racemosa

there is only one species of chaeto up here and that is linum. linum has rhizomes and doesnt spiral like the aquarium kind. when i tried to key it out i got it to be spiralis i believe. any other imput.

I have Chaetomorpha crassa growing on top of one of my powerheads under 60 watts of marine glow atinics. In the front under 192 watts of PC.One atinic and one 10,000K daylight bulb.BTW marine glows are in the back of my tank.Tim.:D

RUNFAST84,

The "feather caulerpa" might also be Caulerpa sertularioides The "grape caulerpa" might also be Caulerpa lentillifera which seems to be more common in the hobby than the real deal C. racemosa. A google search comparing the different species should be all you need to ID what you have.

How many credits is your Phycology course? What text are you using? Are you a bio major? I really enjoyed Phycology.
