Score one for the Amish!

Got a recent recommendation to get a salinity refractometer from a half bearded wise man. Came today and put it to the test. After calibration, put it up against my trusty dusty hydrometer that has carried me for many years.

Results:

Hydrometer 1.026

Refract-O-Meter 1.031



Doh! Well now, that explains a lot of bad memories! Put it to the test three times with same results. Score one for the Amish!


The wise man also extolled the virtues of 'clean living', but I have absolutely no empirical results to support that claim, so 'caveat emptor' if you're buying that line.

And not that much as it worked out, right at 40.00 shipped.

But if you had just tested your hydrometer against some elses refractometer you could still use the hydrometer and just adjust the reading .005 lower and saved the money. That is if a low cost refractometer is always correct.

I've always wondered why someone would buy a refractometer for hundreds of dollars if the $39 ones from e-bay are just as good?

My salinity was off by that much as well. Refractometer was some of the best money ive spent. 40 bux off of ebay as well. everyone in this hobby should get one. It sure beats killin things.

Actually JJMG grew up in north central Ohio very near the Amish. That still doesn't explain why you can't calibrate a hydrometer from a refractometer. Maybe a club buy to calibrate everyones--but I guess that is what a frugal Amish man would do.

My hydrometer was off by .002.

Mine was off a cool 10 points. Between that and my piece of crap aquarium pharmecutical test kits I don't know how I ever kept anything alive.

Hydrometers degrade over time.
How often do you want to check it for accuracy ?

There is more than one way to skin a cat, you proved that, we will just look cooler with our refractometers.

The whole point was that Hydrometers are inaccurate, so save yourself time and other peoples time and get a refractometer, after all - your water quality comes first.

On the subject of refractometers, can you get replacement lens' for them? Mine cracked on one side (I don't remember dropping it or hitting it) and now it's not attached on one side so I have to hold it. It works still but a PITA and not as quick to use.
