Scott W. Michael: what happened to Reef Fishes series?

Well, of course people still read books, however, not enough to justify continuing to publish this series apparently.

I can't express how excited I would be to see the rest of this series I own all the current ones and they are all well worn, TFH makes me go grrrr.

I read more books nowadays in digital format, but would love the last of the set in hardcover to match the rest. It would be an awesome set converted over to digital format as well.

Too bad TFH doesn't see the incentive to release in either format. :(

And they call themselves Hobbyists??!!
They are nothing of the sort. Once again, the CEO mindset shows up, completely oblivious to the interest that spawned (sorry, pun somewhat intentional) industry in the first place.
Sadly, little can be done about it.
Perhaps Michael could self-publish the remaining material in one big volume like the first one, writing it from scratch his notes, etc.
Just an idea for someone to suggest to him...

Sincerely,
Matthew

Rudie Kuiter had the same problem. He basically self published or found a printer that would produce small runs. Luckily, by pre-ordering, I was able to get one from him directly. Great book. Similar to his original wrasses book, but with many of the new discoveries and species "splits". So he got it done in Australia, so you would think it would be possible here. It may be a tremendous hassle for the writer though. Our only hope may be if Scott Michael controls the rights and would be willing to work on a limited run, pre-ordered, basis. In that situation, if someone says they will buy a book and later backs out, it costs the writer money. Seriously, I know I would pay in advance for the remaining books in the series.

Thanks,
Mark

PS - Hope springs eternal!

I'm reviving this old thread because I went to Amazon today intending to finish my Reef Fishes collection and pick up the long-awaited volume on gobies and blennies. I was instead quite disappointed and found this thread a few minutes later.

Anyone have any updates on the effort to get these published? I'm one of those weird folks that likes to read about what I plan to buy (before I buy it, no less!).

I'd like to know too... of all his published ones, i'm only missing the wrasse one. great series, too bad his others aren't looking to be published. :(

I believe some of what would have made up the unpublished volumes has ended up in places like Coral magazine, suggesting that perhaps TFH does not hold copyright. No idea what percentage got published though.

He's always written those articles for some of the magazines, so there's a fair amount of overlap.

"Are their any plans to publish the final volumes of Scott W. Michael's marine fish guides, either in hardcopy or an e-publication? I have heard that TFH holds the rights to these already written materials. Thank you for you time."

"Hi Andrew,
Thank you for your interest in our publications, I have forwarded your email to our publishing Dept and they will advise you on your inquiry below."

Now I'm waiting. I emailed the info@ address that was mentioned earlier and which I found on their website.

I'm going to email too. Maybe if we all send an email we can get a push. I'm sure one email here or there wont do much, but 5, 10, 20, 50 etc... might make them at least sell a e publication. Hopefully!

As frustrating as it is to we the reader to not have further volumes published; must be absolutely maddening to the author :(

Based on the last time I talked to him about it, yes.

He had actually finished everything needed when I still lived in Omaha; we moved from there in 2002.

I've just sent them a request for e publication. Come on the rest of you fish nerds, let's make several requests to try and get this done!

he has recently been selling off some of his personal library, I was lucky to snag a bunch of titles I didn't have..will shoot him an email and ask...he still has some books on ebay, if interested...

Sending a request as well. I put a fair amount of time/effort into tracking down a copy of "Angelfishes & Butterflyfishes" that was reasonably priced and in good condition in order to have all of the books in the series released so far.

I have all the books in the series published so far. I would love to get the rest of the series or any articles published by Scott Michael. Does anyone know who has the copyrights? Self publishing is pretty common today.

Its difficult to keep topics to the forefront of this board anymore, what with the number of new posts each day. Anyone have updates?
