Scott's 270 aka Project Mayhem

Hey Scott, love your build. I noticed you work away from home.

Im planning a new tank build, 225 gallons, but just took a job up in ft mac. working 14/7. Is there any advice you could give for people like us, who are away from home alot? This is the 1 hobby that relaxes me, and the wife is ok with. So any input would be awesome.

Hey AR! Biggest thing I'd say is automation with simple failsafes. Something as simple as my automatic top up (tunze) which runs from a 5g pail. The pail will only fill twice a day. That way if the ATO fails and stays on, worst case scenario it dumps one or two 5g pails into the system before my wife notices something funny like the red light blinking on the tunze controller or the sound of the pump just whirring away in an empty pail. If I had it tied into a large RO reservoir it could be catastrophic. My dosing being run through the GHL Dosers is very slick as well. I just make sure my 5L reservoirs are full before heading out and they will last for two weeks.

I like to be able to look at my parameters on my phone at work through the GHL Profilux. Plus it gives me alarms for if there is water on the floor below the tank and sumps, also if there seems to be a flow issue, raising the water level in the sumps.

And in the end I have an emergency drain that means if the system over fills for some reason it goes down a drain, not on my floor. It really comes down to buying high end equipment, keeping your equipment in decent working order, and trusting those you leave in charge. My wife doesn't test unless she notices something is weird and then I direct her on which test to do. She simple feeds the fish every evening and that's it.

Have a friend your tank sitter can call if SHTF, and be calm with her if something is going wrong :) You know your system better than anyone, it can be tough to explain things in the heat of the moment if you're panicking and they are as well.

I'm sure there are plenty of other things I do but I can't really think of them all off the top of my head right now. Ring ideas off me and I will let you know what I do :)

Thanks Kmoo! How's the solid LED working on your system? I could have added another GHL but went with a hybrid setup and T5's.

Great looking tank man!

Do you think adding another LED unit would eliminate the need for the T5 bulbs?

I don't think I would have been as happy with 4 Mitras as I am with 3 Mitras and the T5 setup. I just have better coverage of the tank. I'd almost need to go 8 Mitras in a 2x4 configuration to get similar coverage. That would definitely be more intense than the current setup but also pricier! There is something about the smooth T5 light with the spotlighting of the LED's. Nice mix :)

So I am pretty sure i am going to pull the trigger on a GHL KH Director. Just add a little more stability to my system. I'm going to run it only as a monitor for the first bit so I can make sure it doesn't have any large shifts that could over/under dose my system. I am assuming GHL has built in some sort of hysteresis so that I can have it ignore one bad test and wait until the next one to react. While I am at it I may put a Doser Maxi on as well to do my water changes and refill the SW that is used up during KH testing. Ideas, concerns, etc?

Bought a little frag setup for going to shows and such! The bucket systems are pretty cool and the egg crate inserts transfer directly into the frag tank. The tank is 18" x 24" x 6" and holds around 11g. I bought a reefbrite XHO 24" for above it. Haven't figured out quite how I am going to mount that yet though. So 3 pails, the tank & lights and I'm good to go!
