I was wondering if it's ok to put sea shells found on the beach for spare hermit shells, I searched around a bit and came up with differing reports. I would think they should be boiled first but then should be ok right?
I've had a Halloween hermit crab for over 6 years now and they use a rather unique shell from the Cone mollusk family. I is cone shaped and has a very narrow slit opening.
My wife and I used to collect shells at the beach (not so much anymore). We have a nice collection of cone shells. So every 9 to 12 months we pull the hermit out of the tank and find a shell from our collection that is just a bit bigger than the one it's using. Then we put them both back in the tank. I could tell you half a dozen funny stories about watching it swap shells back and forth. But in the end it always ends up in the new shell.
