Sea Urchins? Deadly to Fish?

@madeyemary, pencil urchins (true ones, at least) have dull spines and are harmless. You can safely handle one, and you won't get poked or anything. In fact, I know a public aquarium that has a couple of pencils in their touch tank.

Wow. Now that was painful. I seem to recall they get very large too. However, you can then get a pair of coleman shrimp which are gorgeous. The only urchin that they are commensal with.

How would one obtain coleman shrimp? I've been searching forever have yet to hear of specimens in captivity.

I purchased a coral today and while inspecting the attached rock I noticed this little guy hiding out. From spine to spine its approx 1/2 inch..
Is this an Urchin of some sort? Will this be safe to put on my reef display?

Regarding eating coral, mine (blue and black kind, Royal aka Tuxedo) eats these specific polyps....but nothing else so far. Just carries other stuff around. Actively seeks these particular clove polyps to eat though. Ate maybe 100 of them, shame because I liked them. And then he ate some on another frag that hitched. They keep trying to grow back and he keeps eating them so I am 100% sure.

@homebrwr, that's definitely an urchin. Probably a rock-boring urchin, I'd say. Not sure if they're reef safe.
