Hi everybody,I have a favor to ask: My 9 year old daughter is putting together a project about her two seahorses for her school's science fair. She would like to ask you all a few questions, then plans to graph the results for her presentation.

1: What other creatures do you keep with your seahorses?

2: Do you keep wild caught or captive breed seahorses?

3: What do you feed your seahorses/how often?

4: What breed of seahorses do you own?

5: Have your seahorses ever had babies/how many?

6: How many seahorses do you have?

7: How long have you been keeping seahorses?

8: How big is your seahorse tank?

Thanks for your help, Bye, Bye!

Last Chance!!!!

The science fair is next week so we will be putting together the data this weekend. Any last entries??????

Thanks again to those who took the time to help....

I might want to connect a small tank to my reef system to see if I can keep them alive and well... BTW I have a 15 gallon custom nano, with a 20 gallon sumo with 12X12x12 refuge section, it has been up and running for about 8 months now, great coraline algae growth and all corals growing well. I have a pod population you wouldn't believe cause nothing (I think) eats them.

jauger, you'll have better luck finding answers if you start your own thread. This one is for something else :D

To answer, you should let the take at least complete the nitrogen cycle, minimum. IME it is best to let the tank mature for a few months after the nitrogen cycle is completed. I just like to have my tanks extra stable and the pod populations booming.

IMO it is best not to try to keep a seahorse tank attached to a reef tank for several reasons. One seahorses do utilize a lot of room IME. Standard recommendations for minimum tank size is a 29g tall, although IME bigger is better.

Turning your current refugium into a seahorse tank will no longer make your refugium a refugium. They will consume all of your pods in no time, limiting the usefulness of your refugium.

Seahorses are rather dirty animals. They will foul your water quaility of your reef.

Lastly the temperatures most reefs are kept at are not suitable for seahorses IME. Seahorses are often asymptomatic carriers for different bacteria strains, mainly strains of vibrio, and need lower temperatures to keep the bacteria from becoming to virtulent. At higher temperatures the bacteria actually alters it's make up producing different proteins. These abcteria are very aggressive and can often lead to illness especially if there is an intial stressor.
