Sebae warring with BTA?

Have a Sebae and BTA. I keep finding the Sebae attempting to take over the spot the BTA has taken. Will the anemones be alright together?

I don't think so, not in a 20g tank. That size is really not large enough for one anemone as they grow.

You should probably decide which one you want to keep and trade off the other one. Even then, you'll probably either have to upgrade tanks or get rid of the one you keep. 20g really isn't large enough for an anemone.

I think a sebae (H. crispa) would be fine in a 90. We've got one in a 30 (which is as small as I'd go). We've had it for 2 years now and judging by growth and the last two years, they do grow, and can grow quickly, but doesn't seem like it will out grow the tank any time soon.

That said, we've had to move things around as it's grown to stop them from being stung. We also started another tank (bigger one) to move some of our things into, the 30 is turning into a mostly nem/clown tank with a few other things. Luckily, we wanted another fish tank any way ;)

If you're having trouble with the two nems, and with it being 20 gallons, I would heed the above advice and only try to keep one, and if you can upgrade to a bigger tank, that would be all the better :)

Good luck!

I have a sebae and an LTA in my 90 and they have outgrown it.
My sebae is about 22"
Even with your upgrade I would only keep one.
And in all honesty, you really should have your 90 established b4 having any.
I'm moving mine from a 90 to a 180, and even with using all my established LR/LS and water I'm stressed about it.
They need really good params.

Out of curiosity, when people talk of their nem outgrowing the tank, what is the definintion of outgrowing? I think I must have a different understanding of the word.

Davocean:
Looking through your gallery I can see the tank and the nem, but I wouldn't think that it has outgrown the tank. I would whole heartedly agree that it takes up quite a bit of space, and is a massive anemone! I guess I just picture something else when people talk about nems outgrowing tanks...

I'm curious, and hope I'm not hijacking the thread, but how long have you had that sebae? I would be stressed moving the anemone too! Good luck!

Hey RAOUL.
When I say overgrown, I mean if you saw it in person you'd see it looks cramped.
The sebae lays her tents across bottom, and up the glass, and it looks stressed where tents touch sometimes.
Also, it's hard to keep them from touching corals.
You also have to be very aware/safe w/ intakes.
I've had both these nems almost 5 years now.
Had I known then how big they got I would have only got one.
Now I'm too attached to both, they are the pride of my tank!:)
I'm waiting for they're 180 to get back from being polished,(monday) then the real madness begins!

It's Monday, has the madness begun? :)

I'm pretty attached to mine too (we've only had it for two years though). One of the reasons we started another tank last year was to move some of our things from the 30 we started with and turn the 30 into an almost dedicated tank for the clowns and the crispa. We are leaving zoanthids a few other corals, and two fish we figure we have no way of catching easily in there. We could have moved the crispa over to the 75 I guess, but I was too nervous!

Our crispa has outgrown its spot before, and may be getting to that point again. We should be able to move rock closer to the middle giving the nem more space to stretch out. Right now it's on one side of the tank, as far over as we can get so it doesn't pester the other corals. I guess when I think outgrowing the tank I think of the whole tank, not the spot it's in. I have a horrible grasp on measurements, so I have to ask a stupid question. If you were to move the rock around, and let the nem stretch out, would the tents still go up the wall?

This is so interesting to me, thanks for being patient with me and my questions!

Just as an FYI... I was at a new found reefer friends, yesterday. Was checking out his 100g, and 20g nano. He has a Sebae in the Nano that is about the size of a baseball, and is 5 years old.

By the way, I move the Sebae, and it continues to move back to the spot beside the BTA. So I decided to let them slug it out. The BTA is now doing better than ever. Will be putting one in my sons tank until more available room.

Well that's the thing, I'm always rearranging rock just to get like one inch of buffer zone from corals/glass/intakes.
Sometimes I even add a piece of rock, just to deflect or block the nems.
I've run out of options!
Just waiting for that call from my acrylic guy so I can pick up their new tank and get going on it.

We've been doing that too! I guess if we weren't taking things out to make this a nearly dedicated tank I could be saying the same kind of thing - this thing takes up too much space :)

My lfs was hounding me to do that!
I can't do it man, it would be like seperating congealed twins w/ the chance of death or something.
No, I just picked up my 180.
No, I'm not addicted!
I could quit anytime I wanted...I just don't want to!
Guys in white coats are going to take me away for sure!

I admit - I'm addicted! I'm just glad there's no 12 step program yet :) I don't think I have what it takes to cut an anemone in half...I get nervous just moving rocks around.

I'm stressed just moving them to my(their) new 180.
The only reason I got it was for them.
They better make it!
5 years of good luck w/ them, and yeah, I'm knocking on wood as I speak!
I can't get over the size of this monster tank in my living room right now.
Now time to build it!

Sometimes I have to leave the room when my husband moves things around. My frightened gasps unnerve him as well.

I hope you'll post pics when you're done!

Currently in my 30 gal I have my sebae and a rose RBTA. I was worried at first when my rose was looking for its happy spot. I hoped that it would not meet face to face with the sebae, but luckily they have established themselves on opposite ends with a little help from my aquascaping.

I would not feel comfortable with any smaller of a tank being that the rose takes up half the tank.
