Secretive creatures we keep

Secretive animals we keep.
In our tanks, especially if they have been set up for quite a while, besides the normal clownfish, tangs, wrasses and cardinals there is sometimes an entire universe of hidden animals that we rarely, if ever see. I am not talking about the tiny feather dusters or brittle stars that invade most tanks. I am talking about fish and crabs that are in there, but we just either forgot about or rarely see.
In my tank I occasionally see a tiny, bright red gobi of some kind. I don't remember buying it or can even identify it as I just, very rarely catch a fleeting glimpse of it. Cute little guy and I wish he would make an appearance once in a while. I am not sure if I bought him or he came in with some rock or coral.
Another shy fish is my possum wrasse. I love him but he is another one why prefers to stay in the dark shadows only venturing slightly out to grab a worm but never in the full light of the LEDs. I did buy him and may get another one, not to see, but just to know I have. He knows I am watching him as I can see him keep one eye on me as he is trying to get up the nerve to poke his head out. He has this little game he likes to play with me, but I know that he knows that I can see him.
Blue stripe pipefish are among my favorites but they also prefer to hunt in the dark undersides of caves. They do come out in the open but the hunting is better in the caverns so they stay there. Such beautiful little fish, it is a shame they don't knock on the front glass to get my attention, but they don't. I guess if I were such a skinny little defenseless fish, I would stay hidden also.
I once had a brutlyd or cusk eel. I had him for 18 years and never fed him or saw him eat. They are a bright yellow eel looking fish, very nice looking and if you want to have a fish that you only see every 18 years, that is the fish for you. I would usually find him if I looked in the tank after dark with a flashlight. He would be actively searching around the rocks for creatures or forgotten food that he would eat. I had not seen him in a few months and thought he died and it wasn't until I removed all the rock to re-aquascape that I found him by accident. Unfortunately I killed him in another accident with some nice old specimins.
Over the years I have found many creatures hiding among the rocks that I would never have known I had if it were not for an accident. I have found many crabs in holes in rocks that I removed for one reason or another, some of them were quite large.
So far I have not found any Supermodels in any of my closets but I keep searching. Sometimes I look for them at night with a flashlight. I realize I will never catch one eating but you never know

I'm pretty new to this hobby, but I think this is by far the coolest part of it. You never know of everything that's in your tank, you see something new almost every day.

I am pretty old to this, and life in general but it is very cool the stuff we find. Like those huge, jet black slug looking things. OK whats the name as I always forget and am very bad with names. I as married to "Whats her name" for 40 years and still have trouble.
You know those snails without a shell. Anyway, someone will post it. But when I see one it startles me as they get huge and I never know where they came from. I also have a huge snail like the size of a golf ball, and I never buy snails as I collect mud snails for free.
I thought I say Lindsey Lohan in there once, but I was mistaken

I'm always amazed by what creatures are in there. As for the supermodels, I think you will find them in the kitchen searching for m&ms :)

i love finding stuff in my tanks, too. not so much my closet because those are usually **gasp** spiders.

my problem lies in the fact that when i find something in my tanks that i have never seen before, i am so enthralled that i pull a chair up and just watch. invariably, right before this happens, i had turned on the water in the kitchen sink to wash the dog bowls. since i'm almost as old as you, paul, i forget i turned the water on and 45 minutes later or sometimes 2 hours, i think to myself i should probably get busy instead of sitting in front of my tanks all evening and then i get up, walk into the kitchen, wonder why my feet are wet and then i see what i have done.

so now, i keep a little timer thingy next to my tanks. if i see something new or unusual, i set the timer for 3 minutes. so far, it has worked for me. but i'm sure that some day, i will forget to set it and my feet will get wet again.

Do you mean a black stomatella? (fingernail like shield instead of shell)

I love black stomatellas! :)

Or perhaps an elephant snail?

And yes, your favorite part is my favorite part too! I wish I had more than a 65 to lose things in ;)

Sounds like you have a red clown goby maybe? I have never seen one, just heard of one. Maybe hitched in like my yellow clown goby.

i may be older...much older...than you, steve, but i bet i could still run circles around you. of course, i'd get dizzy and fall down so that prolly isn't gonna work for me.

Stomells or whatever. That's it. I knew it had an Italian name like me. Very cool animal that just shows up and they are like 3" long. Nina my hermit crabs have canker sores on their knees older than most people here

Running circles around me would not be difficult. Now. Back when I was younger, however, I used to do 6 miles x 365 days and periodic marathons. Now, I tour the block on occasion.

In the army I would run 22 miles with boots on and a pack.

Wow, I just got out of breath writing that. :hmm3:

i used to walk 7-10 miles/day, being dragged by 2 siberian huskies. i think that's why, 25 years later, i have tin hips.

Unfortunately, I see that in my future. Football, and ten years of running 365 days a year . . .not a good combination.

i have tin hips.

I just got the knee shots made out of mandarin slime, but soon I may get the good aluminum knees as opposed to the wooden ones. We have termite problems here on Long Island
