"seeding" a filter pad

Ok I posted this in the Newbie section, but I couldn't get a straight answer out of anyone. I am setting up my QT tank for the first time. But do to space and just plain looks, I can't have my QT up all the time. So I need to season the filter pad in my sump. How long do I need to leave the filter pad in teh sump before it is ready to use?

I just take water from display and go BB on QT.
I don't think a filter pad will do much for you.
It may even add nitrates a little.
I also keep LR ruble in my fuge that I throw in.

One question so many answers! Water from the display is not enough. Nitrates are not a major concern with with fish (I'm not saying they are not a concern, just not a major concern). Ammonia and Nitrites are.
At least 1 week on the filter pad with a low initial bio-load and the pad should be fine.
Research the life cycle of Ich and you'll know why you don't want substrate of any kind in a QT. No sand, no rock, just a few pieces of PVC tubing for the fish to hide in.
