Seeking Cheap Coral

Hello. I have my first saltwater tank (10g) cycling and I have been looking around several LFS and noticed how expensive corals are. As this is my first sw tank I am trying to keep it relatively simple and low budget. I was wondering if there is anyone in my area that possibly has some beginner corals they would sell (or donate) at a lower price. I just got this light: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01N...8&qid=1485901432&sr=1-2&keywords=aquaneat+led I have two koralia powerheads, and 240 and a 425.
Zoas and mushrooms don't do too much for me I like motion. Corals that I would like include green star polyp, xenia, frogspawn. At some point down the line would also like some hammer and torch corals as well. I am in no hurry, want to add a fish and CUC for a while before any corals then add one or two small corals, just wanted to post this so I can get an idea for who might be able to help out. I live in SE Houston in the Clear Lake area. Thanks so much for your replies. Pic of the tank:

Wait till you see the prices some people ask in the for sale forums here..
Not out of the ordinary to see $600-800+ dollars for 2-3 zoa polyps,etc.. Crazy..

As stated find some local forums/local coral swap meets,etc..
Thats usually the best bet to get very "reasonable" coral prices..

Funny you say that, I have been pondering a road trip there to visit the Georgia Aquarium.

If your serious, I have lots of frags I will give you free. But if you go to the Georgia Aquarium, I please insist you boycott there whale program unless you enjoy watching Belugas swim in a circle and crying all day long.

your too funny with the whales :) beluga are ugly

Find "Reef Pets" on ebay.

He has a web site too.

Ask him if he sells beginner corals.

He's a great guy :)

Have you checked for a reef group on facebook for your area? A lot of areas have them and they are typically good deals between hobbyists.

96 .5W LEDS = 48W of total power. Might be a little to low to grow anything significant. It would be fine for fish only or softies. I don't think I would try any LPS or SPS.

We typically aim for LED's in the 3W range. For instance I have a cheap black box on my tank, it houses 100 3W LED's for a total power of 300W. I run 2 of these units(600W) on a 24x32x24 80G tank and can grow anything I want.

what he said. I'm in the same situation as you. I found a local group on FB and just picked up some frags last night from someone less than 10 minutes from my house for $10-$20 each.

+1

I routinely give away frags to local reefers; otherwise they'd get tossed into the woods (the frags not the reefers).

Isnt that quite a bit of light? Isn't the rule of thumb number x number x 3 / 16?

so.....

24 x 32 x 3 / 16 = 144w

Sounds like a bit overkill. or I might just be going bonkers. :spin2:

I was planning on my 180 72 x 24 x 24

165w Chinese black boxes x 3 for length

Thanks so sad about the whales. They would say they are fine. Once I complained to sea world about their polar bear and got blown off.
