September Collecting Trip!

local hermit crabs?

local hermit crabs?

any one use local hermit crabs in their tanks? obviously not as colorful as some of the others out there, but i'm sure they'd perform the same function... i've always been nervous abuot introducing disease though...

PS - i saw a lion fish at the bridge last week while diving....

Hey all, just rising from the dead to say I'll be there, barring death or explosions or other such catastrophes. I have not been to a club meeting (or even to RC) in ages. Should be fun.

I'll try to hit a couple of subjects here.
-Yes, members only. It is viewed as an extra or bonus offered to those that are members of LIRA and also an insurance issue.

-The local hermits can be quite aggressive picking at many things, but if you're battling extra algae, they at times do a good job on it.

-Snorkeling, YES! The grass beds offer lots to look at. At times there is 10' visibility, it is all wind dependent in the shallow bays.

-Loads of lionfish on LI this year. We have collected over 60 this year, and know of others who have collected 40 as well.
There is good diving/ snorkeling at the Ponquogue Bridge as well, that is very tide dependent and you should hit the slack high tide.
If you hit the outgoing tide, you may do just that and end up outgoing through the Shinnecock Inlet...

Hey welcome back MIke.
Thanks, Chuck.

Joe: I like the sound of lionfish. What species are we looking at?

Wow, that is so cool. My folks have had a house in Hampton Bays for 35 years and I'd never have thought you could snorkel for lion fish in Shinnecock Bay!!!! I've done tons of clamming and muscelling and fishing, but would never have thought of reef fish in there.

Hope you guys have great weather and a wonderful time, and please post the results of your day!!!!

As of right now, my two daughters and I will be attending. They loved it last year.

The lionfish just showed up in 2001, but other tropicals have been visiting LI as long as the Gulf Stream has been coming up from Florida.
Oh and its Volitans.

Addition to the trip

Addition to the trip

Hey,
An interesting development is in the works, Sanjay Joshi and some of the NCPARS club may be joining us on the collecting trip, and hopefully also arrange a small frag swap as they will be spending the night (fri nite) and heading back to PA later on Saturday.

Hey Joe,

The last time we went we were able to take some specimans home - still the same?

Ed

Yup, AMW does reserve the right to keep some of the more obscure critters for display, but there is usually plenty of neat things to go around. I'd like to get some good pics this year of everyone in action and incorporate it into a info/graphic display.
There were some "graphic" shots of some of the LIRA members last year bending over checking out the net contents, but we'll stay away from those shots :mixed:
