Serpant sea star

Thats awesome, thanks a lot kevin. Where do you target feed the stars though? Can they grab a chunk of frozen food (what I would be feeding them) from one of there arms, or do you feed straight into their mouth in the middle?

Thank you very much for all the info, *and link*!

You hold the chunk in your fingers near one of their arms. They'll wrap an arm around the food and take it away from you. :D

As far as being reef safe, they can be a bit of a buldozer, so make sure everything is firmly secured (esp. frag wise)

I have a brittle star as well. Been a resident since about Dec. Love him. Although my coral banded shrimp did just recently disappeared. Im thinking star food, maybe not! Just a wild guess. other than that he is hassle free and cool to watch!

I have a dozen in my 300g. They are superb scavengers. I don't bother target-feeding them and haven't seen them bother fish, shrimp, snail or crab. They're fascinating to watch and I can't recommend them highly enough...

That's awesome. I'm so pumped to get inverts and stuff for the tank but I dont want to disturb more livestock then I already have with this algae removal. Every week when I do a water change it usually involves dirtying up the tank, so I don't wanna stress them out. Hopefully this algae will be goners soon!

Q: Can I get more then one species of sea stars in the tank. For ex. 3 tiger striped and some red stars like the pic kevin showed me, and maybe another type?

thank you for the help

I have had my red one in a 55 for about 5 years no problem.
He is a lot of fun to watch eat, kids really enjoy him.

They are cool, I have one in my 55. I feed him shrimp from the grocery store. My lawnmowwer blenny nips at (dont know what that's all about) I would recommend at least one of them. Mine pays no attention to any of the brittle stars in my tank.

Which one, the red one or the tiger striped one?

I love my serpent star. If you have kids, they are a big hit too when they come out to eat. Mine is in a 180 with 2 fire shrimp and a variety of corals/snails/hermits and can't say he has harmed anything. Mine stays hidden until dinner time.

that sounds awesome. no kids yet. ;)

When I get rid of my algae in the tank, those stars will be added to my tank ASAP..

Thanks for sharing
