Setting thermostats on heaters while using Medal Halides.

Is there a trick to setting the thermostats on your heaters while using Medal Halides? I have a 180 gal and a 40L gal sump/refuge which I keep 3 x 200 watt heaters in the sump/refuge. 2 in the sump (first chamber) and one in the last/return (3rd chamber). Refuge is in the middle 2nd chamber. Water temperature remains pretty steady (80 degrees) in the tank until I turn my lights on (3 x DE MH, 250watts).

Sounds like you have them set.

the heat problem is not with the heaters it is with the lights. install a fan in the canopyor have blowing on the sump

I have fans in my canopy and now a fan blowing on my sump.
the fans and MH's are on the same timer and my temp has been steady at 78F for 3 days in a row (since the sump fan went in).
My heater will kick on if temps drop below 76 but so far so good.

Is that only when your light are on? or all the time? If all the time, then your water temp will go down to 76 right?

Fans on the sump for evap - cools the water. I have sump fans controlled by the water temp with a Reefkeeper unit.

Stand vent fans come on when water hits 79.0+ and up (my stand is not open in the back)
Sump fans come on when water hits 80.0+ and up (blow directly on sump/fuge water surface)

Heaters come on when water is below 78.5-

i would imagine that the heater isnt on once your MH comes on. the heater keeps the water at 80 until the lights come on, which heat the water up higher then the thermostat on the heater is set. so i dont think turning them down will do much...
