Setting up a refugium

I am in the process of setting up a refugium and I have a few questions regaridng the proper sequence of events for the setup........ I am planning on obtaining some live sand and live rock locally from another reefer. I was wondering what is the best way to introduce the refugium to the mix that currently includes an existing sump and my main display tank. Should I just add the sand, macro algae and other critters to the refugium with some newly made water and let her rip, or should I let it sit for a certain period of time (maybe with a power head), not connected to the existing setup? Any other ideas or input on how to introduce this would be appreciated.

Set it up, let it sit overnight to settle with just an airstone or powerhead. Then bring it online and let her rip

how is your refugium set up? is it a hob or is it inside the sump or attached to the sump somehow?

Bill - thanks for the reply. That's makes sense to me.

ivgonmad - The refugium is setup as a separate tank and is being fed by a branch off of my return line and then gravity feeds into the sump.
