Shark Selection

I was thinking the same thing as I would like to keep one with my sharks. I just dont think it is worth the risk. I got my sharks from a guy that was keeping a black trigger, an emperator angel, and a queen angel with them.

I think it can be done, but most of the time it does not work. Im not a gambling man when it comes to the life of anything or anyone.

Odd though, I would think an Emperor Angel might be more prone to "picking", and the Queen is mentioned specifically by several authors as having a bad habit of picking on a shark. Strange.....you never know, I learned a long time ago that there aren't many Absolutes in this hobby, just probability and odds.

i have a 300 fowlr im working on if i were to consider a shark of some kind what would be a good choice my tank dimensions are

96Lx24Wx30H

i will have 1 major rock structure off to the middle of the tank for a eel if i so choose later but also has nooks for fish to hide in. i plan on a pair of triggers either crosshatch or bluethroats /a pair of golden butterflys / a queen angel / a school of anthias / and some fairy wrasses.

any comments on this list yes/no/maybe

any info would be great as the tank is still empty so i want to get my planning before it goes online

Sounds Ok If you like to gamble I would loose the triggers and the buterfly but thats just me . Insted go with a smaller grouper .

triggers were for me the wife wanted the butterfly's i think ill hold off on the shark as it took a while for me to talk the wife into it so i will uphold my end of the bargin

This is so true! I wish people on this site understood that. They hear of a person or two keeping x fish with y fish and they are Ok in a 5g tank, so they think it is OK even though most people and reasearch says it will not work. It seems sad to play the odds with an animals life!

i want angels and triggers so if they will pick then i really dont need a shark would have been cool but there are other animals i can substitute that will fare better than one. thanks for the input tho guys

Well, after giving it alot more thought, I think I'm probably going to skip the shark, for several reasons: 1) I don't have a real good feeling that a shark would be happy in the size (and shape) of my tank....it could PROBABLY be done, but I'd worry about it being cramped, 2) the catsharks get very active at night and might try to chow down on other fish, 3) it would probably knock down some of my rocks while roaming at night and scratch the acrylic, and 4) I already have 2 nocturnal fish (SFE and added a beautiful Zebra eel yesterday), so a shark would make 3 nocturnals in there and would make for a potential somewhat-boring tank.

If I win the lottery, THEN I'll build a 5000 gal shark tank. Come on, lucky numbers!!! :D

Thanks for all the replies!

rnelson,

sorry I've been busy the last few days, but I'm glad to see you've weighed the odds and made a well thought out decision. And just to answer your question about a similar sized grouper in that tank, absolutely. 2' width is hardly big enough for the size many of these predators attain IMO.
