I'm sure it is related to coral, but what is SPS/LPS mean?

Also, what is a Herbie?

Lps is large Polyps Stoneys and sps is small polyps Stoneys

Not to nit pick but SPS stands for Soft Polyped Stoney. (like Acropora)
LPS stands for Large Polyped Stoney. (like Frogspawn)
A Herbie is a type of overflow (drain).

To give a bit more detail, SPS and LPS are hobby terms rather than scientific designations. SPS generally have a large number of very small polyps that closely hug the skeleton whereas LPS have large polyps that frequently extend a significant distance from the skeleton. Things like torch corals and brains are considered LPS whereas Acroporas are considered SPS.

A Herbie overflow is designed to be very quiet but, IMO, requires someone to be pretty adept with plumbing for the initial setup. There are several DIY threads about building a herbie.

Been in the hobby for over 15 years and that's a new one on me.

Well, I suppose those acronyms are just trade slang anyhow, and far from any scientific validity.

I'm going to keep on calling them SPS "small polyp stoney" though.
