Should i throw away my Maroon Clownfish? first timer

I really wanted a nemo setup, 2(or more ) false percula clownfish and a blue tang. I have a Maroon Clownfish bought and quarantined almost 4 weeks now. She's large about 5inches.

I realized that these are aggressive fish especially towards other clowns, should i throw this back at the ocean and buy 2 clownfishes and tang? bought this from a local fisherman very cheap. Couldnt resist the $1 pricetag and couldnt identify between maroon and false percula clownfish at that time. i thought this was the nemo fish until i research more about the color and fish.

Im worried that the Maroon will murder the very expensive blue tang. Also, since this is my first time, i might not be able to resist the tempation to buy other fishes.

I have a 75gallon tank with 30g sump. still under construction but should be finished next 2 weeks. Rocks been curing/seeding since May 2012.

Hi, I'm new here, but this post is concerning to me. Throw away? Throw back in the ocean? I think there should be some responsibility to this poor fish. If you just throw it in the ocean, you're basically feeding some other fish. And, I assume you're just kidding about actually throwing it away, but if you're not...don't do it.

As far as this local fisherman - If he's selling a fish for $1, that should have been a sign.

Another thing, I think, from what I've read, 75 gallons is on the small side for a Blue Tang.

Lastly, I would suggest you find all of the willpower you need to resist the temptation to buy other fish.

As I said, I'm new, but this all seems like common knowledge. Please try and find that maroon a nice home.

the answer is...no. you should not throw the fish away. many people would love to have that clown. even if you live in the south pacific，you should put the fish back as it may spread disease.

the thing with fish, is like other animals they do not always behave in the manner you would like
that is not their fault , so learning to live with it or making alternative provisions are your only real options in a community of people who all care about the creatures we keep

finding a local aquarium store and giving it to them free of charge may be one option
although even that seems a bit unfair to the fish

the secret for future is to be 100% certain you do want what you purchase
impulse buys account for more issues in the hobby than I would like to quantify

No you should not release it back to the ocean. This may contaminate the sea live here in the US even if only until the winter at the most. Likely it will be a meal for a larger fish in a few hours. It also may introduce a new pathogen from your tank into the water. You should flush it down the toilet instead.



Seriously just take it back to the LFS. Most of them will trade the fish for something else, at much lower price that you got from them even 1 hr before. We all pay for our mistake. Becareful what you buy and do research on the animal first

Take it to your LFS or see if you can trade it, here on the forums. Would you "throw away" a dog or cat because they didn't act the way you like?

Remember, they may be small but, fish are like any other animal and should be taken care of responsibly.

I don't know, I read it as a joke. We all know we should not dump aquarium fish back into the wild.

I guess if everyone thinks like I am we would not have all the python in the Everglades and all the Lionfish in the Atlantic water.

It is possible that the OP lives in Indonesia or the Philippines, In which case it is certainly possible that he bought a maroon clown from a fisherman for $1. (That's probably more than the fisherman usually gets for them.)

whew funny stuff..............depending on where your from I would say return it to its original home be it the sea or be it me......it obviously grew well from where it came. And I know here in this house the wife treats ALL the pets better than she treats me hahaha. and we have MANY

yes, throw back. i live where people collect and export the fish. if you know Chuck, we are practically neighbors but i havent met him yet; Also, I just found out and i think he's on hiatus. Want to meet him though.

this is the best local fish store Cebu Mactan Quality Marine Aquarium Fish. This is where I will buy specific fishes i want & the rest will be from the local fisherman. I went there the other day and man! all the fishes I see from liveaquaria is in there. Then there was a lonely fish separated from the others - the maroon clownfish. I told the staff i want to buy that nemo to pair with my fish, thats when i found out that he tends to be agressive. The staff told me that he will kill the other fishes i may have in the future. He then showed me the real nemo fish and the blue hippo tang.

Want to hear people's experiences with having this fish with the other fishes they have. Is there a compatibility list for this fish? or is it just agressive towards other clowns. I have a list of future fishes i want to buy. Im not sure about having him ESPECIALLY since he will be the first fish in the tank. Btw, measured him last night, he's 6 inches, i guess he's a she? do you all agree i should try again?

I wouldn't throw it back. Clowns are very dependent on their anemones. The fish probably wouldn't stand much of a chance if you just threw it back. You would be better of to give it to the local fish store.
