Show me some killer LPS

I usually beeline to the SPS section. This is the first time I've been in the LPS forum. SO far I'm not impressed. :) Let's see some killer stuff. I'll start with a few of my better shots -

What is exactly killer? Its apples to oranges, I could say that sps is just a bunch of colorful branches at best, or I could say that people with sps have more money to take better shots or to have better coral. Besides my dendros, duncans, and my trach, I just have some common stuff and leathers that is not too spectacular. But check out some of the backdated threads(acans or some brain threads) or the lps on liveaquaria.

Not impressed??? Have you scrolled through the chalice thread or the micromussa thread...Talk about killer LPS...loads of them :D.

BTW, Nice pictures, that first chalice is super sweet.

Thanks for the heads up. The chalice thread was good. Micromusa and acans just don't do it for me. I guess I'm just an SPS enthusiast at heart. $250 for the Watermelon huh? That's just crazy. I picked it up for $35 at an auction. Who's charging $250 for it?

I don't remember. I saw someone on here say they sold a 3/4 inch frag to their friend for $200 and someone else told them that $200 was low for a 3/4 inch frag. The seller, disappointed, said they didn't mind they sold it cheap since it was to a friend. Also I think I saw it on a site or two for ridiculous prices.

I don't know whether on not is is killer. But this is my favorite currently.

You got some nice pieces up there.

Echidna09, you are refering to a thread where Unarce posted in the thread about selling the LE red watermelon for $200...you may also be thinking of the LE original pink watermelon...both different chalices than the one pictured above. The red is in limited supply at this point, though more is out and about. The original pink watermelon has been distributed for a couple of years now but still brings a hefty price tag with lineage. None the less there are many super sweet watermelon like chalices out there worth having like the one pictured above for much cheaper. But when side by side with the originals...it is apparent that there are major color differences. I love the grape watermelon on Reefready.net. I need to get on that waiting list, lol. I have a nice watermelon like chalice I got at a swap for free two years ago. It is super nice and I routinely sell nice frags of it for $35-$45 depending on the size of the frag and I have given away a number of frags of it as well.

Yeah that sounds like the right thread. If they look nearly the same, I don't see why everyone doesn't just go for the cheap ones. I'm into rare corals, but if there's a look-a-like act-a-like out there I don't see why not just buy that one and only the hardcore reefers would notice a difference.

Nice pinks Caleb!

I bought it last year at an auction our club held when Calfo came to speak. We had frags donated from many different sources. That chalice either came from Tubs or Stoner SPS if lineage is such an important factor. I just got lucky because there was such an abundance of corals, I had seen this piece earlier and it came out toward the end of the auction when most people's pockets were empty. I don't think lightining strikes twice. ;) I'm just amazed by the prices people charge. I'm glad most pieces can be bought right here on RC for much less. It's nice to see better quality corals getting distributed around the country but I think marketing labels have gotten out of control with regards to pricing.

And yeah those last two pics are killer. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, very nice watermelon btw, friend got a inch piece for I think $40-$50, good buy for yourself also. I got some superman montipora(so-called) for an inch frag for $10, so I guess it all depends if people are generous or if they are just name dropping for a sale.

chessman, is that a gonipora on your 2nd shot? I love those. If it's not, what is it? Very beautiful. Pleco I thought what you said about sps was really funny. =) I used to think that as well. I just get frags because I cannot afford the really good stuff! I have to say though, I think that LPS corals go for a lot more than SPS! I've seen some micro's on LA going for over 500.00! My goodness! I don't think I have seen any SPS go for that price. I honestly like a mixed reef the best. I find myself drifting back to LPS. I'd love a teal/blue hammer (rare). Those just give me chills.

Yes. I didn't have much luck with one when I started and had it on my corals to avoid list. Then a friend of mine had a red goni and I really wanted one. I finally placed an order with Atlantis and it did great until I fragged it for a friend. It died shortly after that. I should have left it alone but I was trying to help out a good friend who helped me in the past. I hope to get another one from Atlantis when I have money to burn. Maybe next summer.

Nice additions everyone. That's what I was hoping for.
