I've been drooling over these for a while but I don't know anyone with a successful colony. Show me yours and tell me what you did to keep it happy. Wanna see those sexy blue and whites!!

Thanks.

I also have had difficulties with echinata. I have killed several colonies. Recently I got another colony and I am hoping people will chime in here....

Mine does better being blasted with light and indirect flow. Will try and get a pic tomorrow, but the halides are already of for the day...

My hawkins is doing well. I'm particularly interested in the ice fire. It almost seems like the pieces need to be nearly bleached to be successful.

Not really, I just find in lower light the IF likes to brown out a bit on me. It is hard to call the vibrant blue coloration bleached. ;)

Here's my Aquascene Ice Fire Echinata:

The pic is kinda old...my frag is a tad larger now. I keep mine up high with lots of flow.

This was the first sps coral I ever purchased. Of course when I first purchased it I had no clue what I was doing. I pretty much lost the entire piece with the exception of a few millimeters. I was able to bring it back and it just kept growing and growing. I considered it the xenia of the sps world - grew more than my birdsnest corals. There weren't any special tricks to keeping it alive or to grow so fast. I found when blasted with a 250W 14k MH the color and growth was the best. I would frag it every two or three weeks. Even toward the bottom of my 30" deep tank it would still grow incredibly fast, but it would "blue" out and not brown out.

Unfortunately I just moved and lost about 80% of my sps including all my colonies of Ice Fire. It's been quite depressing looking at my tank and lack of coral. Wish I had some pictures to share.

Agreed about color. Seems that the most dramatic color is when the tips are bright blue and the branches are very lightly pigmented.

Are you talking about the reef farmers LE only, or also similar corals? I have a wild one that is growing into a nice colony, but the blue is not as blue and the white is more of a cream... so definitely not the LE ice fire, but I can take a pic if you want.

Please post a picture. The one I'm referring to is at unique corals

I picked it up May or June 2008. It was maybe 1/2-3/4”. I remember being so disappointed I spent so much and got so small of a frag. I bought the Bazooka Joe chalice in that same order. My Ice Fire has grown a lot better than the BazJoe. It's probably around 6” with multiple branches. Is a steady grower, but didn't really take off for me until it hit the 2-3" mark.

This is a macro of my colony. It is from Unique Corals probably 7-8 months ago.

Its 1/2 way down a 29" deep tank under an Apollo Reef Led. I think the colors on it are great. But there has been almost no growth.

I also have a piece in my outdoor frag tank. The color is green with purple tips and there is almost no growth on that piece as well
